00:07:26Japan's meteorological agency says the quake measured magnitude 8.4.
00:07:30>> Listening there to nhk coverage there in japan, they keep talking about an 8.4.
00:07:409 quake.
00:07:43A great quake.
00:07:43I received a tweet here from a person who is in japan.
00:07:47I've asked them and sent them a tweet to ask for their number so we can talk to them.
00:07:53They're saying frequent aftershocks, a first time in my life.
00:07:56In japan.
00:07:57So this is a traveller, a tourist in japan who is tweeting to me.
00:08:02And anyone else who is in japan who wants to send a tweet, please take the time.
00:08:08Feel free if it is safe at rosemary cnn.
00:08:18Do get online and send a twitter.
00:08:21Led get back to the pictures.
00:08:22Get that sound turned down in meer if you don't mind.
00:08:27It is distracting.
00:08:28We're looking at all of this debris on the ground there.
00:08:32Just moving right across japan coming from the coastal areas.
00:08:36We see the boats.
00:08:38We see cars, mud, all the debris moving through there.
00:08:46Thankfully this is farm area.
00:08:48It is moving into somer building there's and we saw the blaze on the ground.
00:08:53I want to go back to see what additional information ivan has.
00:08:56>> We just had another major earthquake offshore.
00:09:001 which would be devastating enough.
00:09:04Shl over enough and closer to the shore.
00:09:06Some of these folks in these farmlands in these buildings have no idea what is happening right now.
00:09:13They are perhaps 100 plus kilometers away from the shore and they are seeing on a sunny day in japan, this coming in.
00:09:23Unless you're watching tv and unless you're listening to the radio, you won't have an idea what's coming up.
00:09:28This is where we get the casualties.
00:09:31Folks not aware of what's coming and not able to reach higher ground.
00:09:36Unfortunately, the tragic thing is we're seeing that wave of mud and debris and buildings and fire just encompass some of those home there.
00:09:45And we hope they're empty.
00:09:48Certainly some of them probably are not, rosemary.
00:09:51There you see the initial wave coming in.
00:09:54Also we want to keep monitoring folks in the back, the shoreline.
00:09:59Again, this is not happened once.
00:10:01We're talking about a tsunami that come in.
00:10:03The first initial wave and then another wave and perhaps even a third wave after that.
00:10:08With an 8.9 great earthquake.
00:10:11That shallow, that close to the shore.
00:10:13There are going to be more tsunamis coming in.
00:10:15So we'll have to watch that very closely there.
00:10:19That doesn't look good there.
00:10:20You see the breakers there.
00:10:23An ongoing threat.
00:10:25So this is going to be historic undeed.
00:10:28>> And where people can.
00:10:30And of course it very difficult.
00:10:31You need to get to higher ground.
00:10:33In any of those countries we've mentioned, any of the coastal areas, you need to move and you need to move quickly and get to higher ground.
00:10:45I've got matt talk us to us from he can to yoefl he was there when the earthquake hit.
00:10:50Now an 8.9 magnitude quake.
00:10:53Tell us about the situation.
00:10:559 hit.
00:11:00>> It was absolutely unlike anything I've ever experienced before.
00:11:04I've been living here eight years now.
00:11:06This was quite simfully biggest, longest lasting earthquake I've ever experienced here.
00:11:12>> That's it.
00:11:13Our reporter there was saying she thought it was four to five minutes.
00:11:17Was that your sense as well?
00:11:24>> The ground was rolling for an extended period of time.
00:11:28My wife and I stood outside and basically held on to the outside of our house.
00:11:32You couldn't even stand up.
00:11:34At the peak of these waves that were washing over the ground, you literally could not stay on your feet.
00:11:40You have to crouch down in a ball or put your back against something so you didn't fall.
00:11:44That's exactly what we did for the length, the duration of it.
00:11:51It was probably two minutes and felt like it was a lot longer.
00:11:54>> Are you saying that you live there?
00:11:56You're actually traveling there?
00:11:59>> I actually live here.
00:12:00I've lived here the last eight years and I live on the west side of the city in a little section of tokyo.
00:12:08And yes, there are earthquakes from time to time but we've never, ever felt anything on the literal magnitude of what we experienced today.
00:12:17>> That's exactly the story we're hearing.
00:12:19As we are talking, we're looking at this extraordinary wave.
00:12:23Another tsunami wave moving toward the japanese coast.
00:12:27Where are you located?
00:12:30Are you away from any threat of tsunami coming ashore?
00:12:34>> Yes.
00:12:36We're very fortunately located inland.
00:12:39There are rivers and streams but those aren't being affected by the tsunami.
00:12:43I would say we're a good 10 to 15 miles from coastline so we don't have to worry about that where we are.
00:12:49The footage that we're seeing, the video that we're seeing on the television screens is absolutely, it is heart-wrenching, actually.
00:12:56You know that probably a lot of those people did not have a chance to evacuate before the wave hit.
00:13:03Even though they were telling people, you need to get away from the shorelines.
00:13:06You need to get away from the water.
00:13:09Watching this wave hit and cars and buildings and houses being swept away.
00:13:13I think we're going to see a significant number of casualties.
00:13:16Especially in the northern part of the country.
00:13:21>> You've been there a number of years.
00:13:24I have to apologize.
00:13:25Someone was nauk my ear when you mentioned the number of years you've been there.
00:13:29How long did you say you've been there?
00:13:31>> I've been here for eight years.
00:13:33My wife is japanese.
00:13:36She's lived here most of her life.
00:13:39This was something neither of us, we were completely unprepared for this.
00:13:42It was a beautiful spring day.
00:13:43It was sunny outside.
00:13:45I had just come home from a little errand to the grocery store and all of a sudden, bam.
00:13:50It just hit.
00:13:51You could tell this was different instantly from other little tremors that we've had before.
00:14:02Things started falling off the shelves and the desks.
00:14:06You could hear this strange eerie creeking sound of all the buildings all around us as they were shaken by the tremor of the ground.
00:14:13It was something I hope I never have to hear again.
00:14:17Unfortunately, we keep getting aftershocks.
00:14:20We've had three or four so far.
00:14:22Probably going to be other ones as well.
00:14:24>> The reality, living in japan, this is something that you're very used to.
00:14:29As you sxa of course as people who have lived there all their lives, they know when this is different.
00:14:34And this felt very different.
00:14:41>> I think this will be a tremor to remember so to speak.
00:14:44I think people will be talking about this for a long time to come.
00:14:47Tokyo hasn't seen anything like this in decades.
00:14:50More than half a century.
00:14:51>> And matt, you mentioned your wife is japanese.
00:14:54For her presumably, when this quake hit, she was no doubt a little calmer, perhaps, than you were.
00:15:01Because she would be used to this situation.
00:15:03What did she say to you?
00:15:06>> Absolutely.
00:15:07You know, the first thing she said was to open up all the doors and the windows just in case.
00:15:13Japanese people have been trained for this contingency since they were children.
00:15:18It is such an earthquake prone country.
00:15:20The first thing is leave the windows and doors open.
00:15:23In case the building shifts, you don't want to get trapped if the doors get caught in the door jams.
00:15:29We brought our shoes in the house with us which is something in japan you never do.
00:15:32You never bring your shoes in with you.
00:15:34We brought them inside in case there was broken ground.
00:15:41She said get in the corner, put your back against something and wait for the tremors to subside before trying to stand up and walk around so you don't hit your head.
00:15:50She was the cool headed voice of reason during this.
00:15:53I was pretty much running around like a chicken with my head cut off.
00:15:57>> The calming influence of a wife that's very much needed in a situation like this.
00:16:02As we speak, we are continuing to look at these aerial shots.
00:16:06We saw that justify began tuck wave hitting again toward the coast.
00:16:10We've probably witnessed in live tv in all of our global audience have witnessed this.
00:16:17We've watched it unfold.
00:16:18Which I can't remember a situation where this ever occurred.
00:16:25Whir see this occur.
00:16:26Japan and the journalists are used to covering these things.
00:16:30They have their cameras trained on all these critical shot like the tsunami waves coming to shore.
00:16:35I don't know if you can talk to some of the pictures we saw a little earlier.
00:16:38We saw all of this mud and debris boats and cars moving across a farm area.
00:16:46Now I don't know if you were able to talk to that at all.
00:16:51What can you say and tell us about that?
00:16:55>> The earthquake, the he was of the earthquake as far as i understand it was in a prefecture sell hundred kilometers north of tokyo.
00:17:02And I think the footage we're seeing largely of these waves of debris, it is like a monster movie.
00:17:08Seeing this stuff wiping out entire sections of the coastline is all generally from that area.
00:17:14Also, the northern most island of japan is taking a major hit.
00:17:18We've been seeing a lot of footage of what is washing over farmland and other places near to the coastline.
00:17:26There has been some really heart-wrenching footage of cars racing away from the water.
00:17:31Unfortunately, we don't know if those people made it away or not.
00:17:35Just watching it, it really is almost, it is terrifying.
00:17:39It is really terrifying.
00:17:41And there are scattered reports --
