00:00:04>> Reporter: The basketball team is practicing right now but with a big hole in the lineup.
00:00:13The 16-year-old is out after a nearly fatal heart attack in a game last week.
00:00:16We met him this afternoon at ucsf children's hospital.
00:00:21Davey can play video games but what he really wants is to get back on the basketball court.
00:00:25>> As soon as possible.
00:00:29[ Laughter ] can't wait.
00:00:30>> Reporter: Near the end of tuesday's game he collapsed and his coach, who is also a police officer, and a firefighter kept him alive until firefighters arrived.
00:00:42His father watched in horror.
00:00:43>> At the time in need, they didn't hesitate to jump in and help save my child's life.
00:00:52>> I basically want to send the message to everybody that they need to get checked out and do the same thing I did, yeah.
00:01:00>> Reporter: The family is calling for all student athletes to go through a more rigorous examination to play sports.
00:01:10>> They need to do more, and an ekg will hopefully find something like this.
00:01:19I'm not saying it's a cure but we have to sort some place.
00:01:23>> Certainly there are some things that can p be picked up with an electro cardiogram.
00:01:36>> We can take more and ensure our students are safe.
00:01:41>> Reporter: It's unclear when davey will get out of the hospital but he may eventually be cured.
00:01:48His family has set up a medical trust at mechanics bank.
00:01:55>>> A san mateo county judge today upheld a jury's death sentence for the convicted killer of an east palo alto police officer.
00:02:02Jurors in december recommended the a death penalty for alvarez for killing richard may in 2006.
00:02:11He was killed after responding to a report of a fight at a taqueria.
00:02:20Members of officer may's family addressed the judge before the sentence was handed down.
00:02:30>> This -- getting to this point has ended this chapter in our lives.
00:02:34I've known since we decided to go for the death penalty that there would be appeals.
00:02:39And I'm okay with that.
00:02:42>> An appeal of a death sentence is automatic when someone is sentenced to death row.
00:02:48Alvarez is being transferred to san quentin's death row.
00:02:52>>> Tensions are rising in vallejo where there have been a series of crimes.
00:02:58A homicide followed a killing over the weekend and two high- profile attacks last week.
00:03:05Christian kafton is live with details and what city officials are doing about it.
00:03:09>> Reporter: This morning's homicide is the latest of high- profile crimes that are stretching the police departments to its limits.
00:03:18Vallejo police are investigating the shooting death of 42-year-old mathew hicks.
00:03:22Shot and killed early this morning outside his girlfriend's home.
00:03:26The victim's sister said the family is coping the best they know how.
00:03:29>> How are we gonna deal with it?
00:03:32Like every other family.
00:03:34We're gonna pay.
00:03:34>> Reporter: Police confirmed that hicks is the suspect of an assault last week.
00:03:45Investigators say there's no clear connection between the two crimes and add that they had investigated hicks in related to a domestic disturbance call just an hour and a half before he was killed before this latest incident, vallejo investigators were already stretched thin looking to solve a homicide from saturday morning searching for an april tempted murderer who shot an ice cream vendor in the chest and looking for more suspects in the city worker assault.
00:04:08>> A couple of the detectives are working on more than one case of this magnitude.
00:04:16They are stretching their abilities.
00:04:19>> Reporter: Mayor osby davis today acknowledged that fewer officers are doing more work.
00:04:24>> The police department is doing a herculean job in apprehended the responsible parties for at least half of those crimes that occurred this past week.
00:04:33It's unusual that you would have such a rash of violence all at one time.
00:04:38>> Reporter: The mayor says he was briefed by the city manager and by the police department and the mayor says he will have a more comprehensive statement about crime tomorrow.

00:04:50>>> The stock market continued its ongoing decline with the dow jones industrial average closing below the 10,000-point level for the first time since last november.
00:05:01The dow finished down almost 104 point, ending the day at 9908 with the nasdaq closing at 2126.
00:05:12Analysts say investors are worried about europe's debt problems and the pace of the u.s. economic recovery.
00:05:19>>> A national survey find gas prices falling all across the country.
00:05:23According to the lundberg survey, the average price for unleaded is 2.67.
00:05:29That's down 5 cents in the last two weeks.
00:05:31Here in the bay area in san francisco, a gallon of regular 97 and according to triple-a in san jose it's 2.95ened in oakland it's 2.94.
00:05:42>>> It's been a day of mixed emotions for a grieving south bay family.
00:05:47Police say a speeding reckless driver in an suv ran over and killed joshua west while he was riding his bicycle in los gatos last monday.
00:05:58Today he was laid to rest while the driver faced a judge.

00:06:05>> Reporter: Julie, it's been a painful day for the victim's family and friends.
00:06:08The man accused in the killing made his first court appearance in san jose while in santa clara west's family said its final goodbyes.
00:06:20There was a sad crowd inside the mission cemetery chapel in santa clara today, saying farewell to 28-year-old joshua west who was killed one week ago in los gatos while riding his bicycle to a physical therapy appointment.
00:06:32Police say a man speeding down lark avenue in an suv swerved around traffic at a red light crashing through a pedestrian barrier, killing west before hitting a pole and overturning.
00:06:45At the funeral, mourners knew the driver was due in court.
00:06:47>> It's hard to be angry.
00:06:50We're all so sad.
00:06:51I don't want to be angry.
00:06:53I don't want to hate anybody.
00:07:00>> Reporter: Wearing a neck brace, 50-year-old kevin was arrested for vehicular manslaughter and he did not enter a plea.
00:07:09Both sides agreed to delay official charges since the police investigation is ongoing.
00:07:15Investigators want to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved and if kevin tried to flee the scene.
00:07:21>> One charge can be dropped.
00:07:23Another can be added depending upon what type of physical evidence they find.
00:07:29>> Reporter: Right now the focus is on west's 7-year-old daughter.
00:07:34>> Her mother and grandmother asked me to make sure we will be in her lives.
00:07:38And we will.
00:07:40Absolutely.
00:07:40Everybody will.
00:07:41>> Reporter: The family also thanked the public for donations made to a wells fargo fund set up for brianna west.
00:07:50The attorney for the defendant declined to comment.

00:07:55>>> Emergency workers in mendocino county stay a woman chasing after her dog fell 60 feet down a steep cliff to her death.
00:08:05Witnesses say they saw the woman disappear over the western ing of the mendocino head lands.
00:08:17Firefighters were able to recover her body from a rocky beach area behoe.
00:08:27>>> Fire crews still at the scene of a -- or at an abandoned warehouse in the south bay.
00:08:35The four-alarm fire started 00 at that warehouse on dobbins drive near king road.
00:08:44There are no reports of injuries.
00:08:45The warehouse has been abandoned for several years and fire officials are not sure if anything was inside the building.
00:08:50>> They say they interest still trying to figure out what started the fire.
00:08:54>> An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire that gutted a sunnyvale restaurant.
00:09:01This started at a karaoke bar on ko drive near the lawrence expressway.
00:09:07The fire quickly spread between the ceiling and roof.
00:09:09Firefighters battling flames inside were evacuated just before that roof collapsed.
00:09:14No injuries were reported.
00:09:15The fire also caused a power outage in the area for about 40 minutes.
00:09:24>>> Somehow who bought a california lottery ticket in the south bay is now holding a ticket worth $20 million.
00:09:29The winning ticket was bought at a 7-11 store on bascule.

00:12:43The service was held this bonaventure church in concord.
00:12:5024-Year-old army private first class scott barnett was killed in combat january 28th in southern iraq near the air base.
00:12:59An army officer said he showed a special strength in character while the nation was at war.
00:13:11>> He showed courage, patriotism.
00:13:16>> Private barnett was a native of concord.
00:13:18He's survived by his wife and high school sweetheart, nikki.
00:13:23>>> San francisco's chinese community is getting ready for the annual lunar festivities.
00:13:29In chinatown merchants are hoping for large crowds.
00:13:33Chief gascon reminded storeowners to watch out for extortionists who often use this time of the year to headache down merchants for money while threatening violence or vandalism.
00:13:43>> They take advantage of the holidays to ask for protection money and, you know, money to provide services that quite frankly the police department gives them no right.
00:13:56>> Last year there were six extortion cases compared to hundreds a few years ago.

00:15:51>>> A new uc davis study links a woman's age with whether she will give birth to a child with autism.
00:15:59Researchers examined the records in california in the 1990s.
00:16:01They found that women who gave birth after age 40 are nearly twice as likely to have a child with autism as those under 25.
00:16:11That's regardless of the father's age unless the mother is younger than 30 and the father is over 40.
00:16:19>>> Some democratic lawmakers joined a rally to support more funding for breast cancer screening programs.
00:16:24They say they are upset the state has temporarily halted low enrollment programs for women who need free ma'am mow maples.

00:16:38The money is dwindling for the tobacco industry because fewer californians are buying cigarettes and smoking.

00:17:02So far the association of california egg farmers says it hasn't heard of any egg farmers planning to relow date.

00:17:14The legislation creates a green financing program.
00:17:18It provides loans to finance energy efficiency, water conservation and other environmental improvements to homes and businesses in the city.
00:17:25The loan is attached to the property and is paid back through property taxes over the life of the loan.
00:17:31>>> There's no more comprehensive green financing program in this country.
00:17:38$10Million has been approved as of today.
00:17:41$150Million will be enabled through this legislation.
00:17:47>> Mayor newsom always says the program will help create more green jobs in the city.
