00:00:00Whose 6-year-old daughter was shot and killed.
00:00:03Jim, again our condolences.
00:00:05As we speak again, are you not going to be able to rest until this man is is caught/captured?
00:00:11>> Yeah, thank you, first of all, for letting me talk about my daughter and, yeah, I mean paul is ruthless and diabolical.
00:00:19He's already proven that he's completely dangerous and, you know, we're not getting a lot of sleep until, you know, he's caught or killed.
00:00:28>> Jim, I've got to ask you while we have you here.
00:00:31How are you holding up?
00:00:33Here it is you and I speaking again a few days later.
00:00:36It's not getting any easier, is it?
00:00:39>> No, sir, not at all.
00:00:40It's -- it's still surreal but the reality is still sinking in and especially my wife losing her daughter and her mother in the same day.
00:00:51She's having a really hard time.
00:00:53>> I'm sure.
00:00:55Again, jim, our thoughts and are with you and your and family to stay strong during this unimaginable grief right now.
00:01:06Let's talk about paul michael marriage, the man on the loose.
00:01:09Any leads where he might be?
00:01:10>> Lots of leads thankfully have been called in from the public and the jupiter police marshal service is following up on each and every one.
00:01:21Adding him to their top 15 most wanted is is also a great thing for this case because it provides this case with more resources across the board, it provides it with more national exposure and gets it out there into the marshals' offices.
00:01:36If this is any test for instance for the last guy added to the list, como, from texas, he was napped within a couple of days.
00:01:45We hope for the same success.
00:01:47The marshals work extremely hard and together and with local officials across the board.
00:01:54We are asking anyone with information to contact your local marshal's office to be able to provide them information.
00:01:58>> Don clark, how do investigator go about finding this guy?
00:02:02Again, armed and dangerous and he's already killed and killed family members.
00:02:05>> Well, he has already killed and jennifer hit it on the head, the idea is getting these entities together, getting all the information together and getting it out to certain law enforcement areas.
00:02:16Also, they've got to sift through and figure out what can they let out to the public without exposing their positions along the way.
00:02:24They have a couple tack cal areas they will go, one towards the public and the other with strictly law enforcement to get this guy off the streets, mike.
00:02:33>> Okay, don.
00:02:34Very serious criminal on the u.s. marshals' top 15 list.
00:02:39What does that mean you to that, he's likely to strike again?
00:02:42>> Well, I don't think so in this particular guy's case and I've just been able to look at a little bit of information about this guy.
00:02:51I don't see anything that would lead that direction.
00:02:54Usually the history of the individual would say what -- would determine whether one might say, hey, that guy is going to hit again.
00:03:00This looked like a very special and terrible incident that he got involved in with the family there that he took on with the family because the family was perfectly innocent in this thing, from all the information that I get.
00:03:11So, I don't think that that's necessarily the case that this particular person will kill again.
00:03:16But, the reality is that they've got to catch him now for all the trouble that he has caused to his family and everything else.
00:03:22>> Right.
00:03:23What is definitely concerning, despite -- besides the fact he's already killed, he bought a high-powered rifle with a bipod, which may say more could come.
00:03:33We'll talk about that and more to jim just if he saw anything, noticed anything about this man.
00:03:39We all ask why, we'll talk about motive, as well and take your calls.
00:03:43The number, 1-877-tell-hln.
00:06:07>>> Welcome back to "prime news" on hln, continuing our conversation a serial killer on the loose.
00:06:13He was having thanksgiving dinner, invited to join the family for dinner.
00:06:17He leaves and comes back and guns down six family members, four shot and killed, two survived.
00:06:25We're taking your calls, 1-877-tell-hln.
00:06:28Jim sitton is with us, the father of one of the victims, his 6-year-old daughter was shot while she slept.
00:06:36I -- it's hard to even put that into words, jim.
00:06:39I'm sure we can't even imagine what you are going through but thanks again as you join us and lend insight into this.
00:06:45I'm sure you're asking why.
00:06:46As you look at this, did he tip himself off at all, did he say or do anything that would make you suspicious that night.
00:06:53>> No, at the dinner table he sat just a couple people away from me and we talked and joked around, talked about football.
00:07:00There was no arguments or we weren't talking about politics or religion it was just family nice thanksgiving dinner.
00:07:13>> Had he been in contact with the family or like a reunion and he was invited and kind of unexpectedly.
00:07:20>> I met paul maybe 15 years ago and haven't seem him in about 10 years.
00:07:28>> You and I have talked about it, he had a resentment toward family members.
00:07:33Did he have resentment towards his twin sisters, his aunt, your little girl?
00:07:38>> Well, first of all, these are in-laws of mine.
00:07:41>> Okay.
00:07:41>> So, I wasn't really in with all of the family politics.
00:07:46But, it seems to me that he harmed his sisters out of jealousy and to hurt his mother and father.
00:07:58>> Okay.
00:07:58Are you fearful he will strike again, jim?
00:08:03>> At this point, I mean, he's already proven that he's evil and that, I mean, I've never heard of anyone going in and executing a little girl in her sleep.
00:08:15>> I know it.
00:08:15>> So, if he can do that, he can do anything but he's not sick.
00:08:22He's violent.
00:08:23He's not mental.
00:08:24He's evil.
00:08:25And, I mean, he premeditated this.
00:08:28He planned everything down to the smallest detail and he knows it's wrong because he's hiding.
00:08:36So, you know, he's a murderer and he's evil.
00:08:41>> You've laid it out there, jim.
00:08:44You've laid it out there, the truth of the matter.
00:08:46Michelle, looking at video of him at a gun shop.
00:08:48I mentioned the high-powered rifle with the bipod.
00:08:53What else did he buy here?
00:08:54>> We know he did, in fact, make purchases before the thanksgiving shooting.
00:08:58That particular video you are looking at on your screen right now is how -- happened the day before, thanksgiving day, that wednesday.
00:09:06Investigators aren't saying for sure exactly what he bought inside of there but are releasing some of the gun details, as to what he may have on his person right now.
00:09:15So, that is something to take into consideration that this man, investigators do believe is is armed and dangerous and also what investigators are doing throughout the last two weeks, mike, is, as the days go on, they release something new, which I think is great, they release a new picture.
00:09:32They release new video, a new bit of information and add him marshals' top 15 most wanted so this is a great tactic to be able to keep paul merhige into the public, his face out there where the leads will come in.
00:09:45>> That's so important.
00:09:46Guys, we have to leave it there.
00:09:48Don, michelle and jim, thank you again for your time.
00:09:51We'll keep following this story.
00:09:52How about this one, here's a situation man loses his job can't pay his bills now the debt collectors are breathing down his neck calling and harassing.
00:10:01Some just abusive, cussing threatening people.
00:10:05Now a woman is saying the stress led to her husband's death.
00:12:47>>> Welcome back to "prime news" on hln.
00:12:49It is bad enough to lose your job, worried sick, you can't pay the bills then have the debt collectors calling and harassing.
00:12:56We hope you didn't know that feeling but many do.
00:12:59These debt collectors are getting downright abusive, THREATENING, CUSSing PEOPLE OUT Over the phone.
00:13:06One woman says it got so bad it literally killed her husband.
00:13:14>> Reporter: Here's how debt collectors are supposed to treat you on the inform.
00:13:18>> I wanted to inform you and am obligated to inform you this is an attempt to collect a debt.
00:13:23>> Reporter: This is how they're not.
00:13:31diane McCloud says the call is one of hundreds he got before he died of heart failure.
00:13:36How many phone calls a day would you get?
00:13:39>> Six, seven.
00:13:40There might have been more.
00:13:42>> She's now suing greentree servicing, llc using harassing tactics that broke florida law and she claims led to her husband's death.
00:13:51>> The stress just built up with him.
00:13:53He had trouble sleeping.
00:13:54Not eating well.
00:13:56The stress was getting worse and worse for him.
00:14:00>> Lanny: The company's general counsel told cnn, quote: After a heart attack and continuing heart problems, he went on disability in 2002.
00:14:22They felt behind about three months on their moirnlg payments.
00:14:25The calls began.
00:14:26This one after explaining to the collector he had been life flighted to the hospital.
00:14:31>> Why didn't you have that hept copter bring you up a bring that thing into the office?
00:14:35>> Reporter: Scare tactics charges their attorney, billy howard.
00:14:38>> That's how these mafia-like tactics result in so much money.
00:14:45People are scared.
00:14:45>> Reporter: Howard says this is not an isolated incident.
00:14:48He's got hundreds of cases involving other clients.
00:14:51Now, how would you feel if you got a call like this: >> When I see you, I'm going to [ bleep ] you up.
00:14:59I want my money and I want it now.
00:15:01>> Reporter: Or this one.
00:15:03>> You haven't herd the last of me and if it takes me a year, takes me two, believe me, I will find you.
00:15:11>> We want them gone.
00:15:13We want all of them gone.
00:15:14>> Reporter: She run as debt collection agency.
00:15:16She says collectors breaking the law should be prosecuted.
00:15:19>> Sometimes the industry is penalized for a few bad apples and we try very hard.
00:15:24I know here at our firm, we absolutely make sure that we're in compliance.
00:15:30>> Reporter: With the recession the number of people in debt has gone up, so has the number of complaints against debt collection agencies.
00:15:38According to the federal trade commission between january and june of this year, they received 45,000 complaints.
00:15:44That's up more than 20% over the same period last year.
00:15:48But, the ftc has only one case pending, referring most complaints to the states for legal actions to protect consumers.
00:15:56Attorneys say if you get harassing messages, do what he did, save the tapes.
00:16:05>> Good advice there.
00:16:07We're taking your calls and want to hear your stories, your questions about this.
00:16:10We have our experts standing by.
00:16:12Joining us to talk about this -- author of "generation debt" staff writer at fast company magazine for advice here.
00:16:21Also with us michelle gollin, clinical psychologist as we try and manage the stress money can be such a stress and such a load on so many of us.
00:16:32I want to start with you, if people are getting these harassing phone calls where it's causing that stress, what rights do people have?
00:16:40What can they do?
00:16:41>> It's really important to remember the fair debt collection practices act governs all of the options you do have.
00:16:47These collectors, they are not allowed to use abusive or profane language, clearly violations we heard in those tapes.
00:16:54They are not allowed to contact you late at night or early in the morning or to call your neighbors or to call you at work.
00:17:00It's very important you know all of your rights as these go forward and not allow yourself to be persecuted by these calls.
00:17:09>> You have your rights violated, what do you do, cussing you out or calling your neighbors, what recourse do you have?
00:17:17>> You can file a complaint, as mentioned or request they contact your attorney and only your attorney and if they do not send you a written verification of the debt you are not obligated to answer any of their calls and seize to answer their calls and put them through the attorney if you are table to retain one.
00:17:33>> Let's bring in michelle on this.
00:17:37We heard the stories of the McLEODS, VERY SAD STORY.
00:17:44How bad can the stress be?
00:17:47>> It causes so much anxiety on the individual, the couple, the family.
00:17:53What you are dealing with on that level -- people have committed sue site on these issues it is really about anxiety and stress and hopelessness these harassing phone calls especially the really scary, scary ones can take you down that road of hopelessness quicker, very dangerous.
00:18:14>> What do we do?
00:18:15It can be daunting, you are not sure when you'll get more money and be able to pay that bill.
00:18:21How do you maintain calm and not panic?
00:18:23>> You know, again, I think what you have to do is try to sit down as a -- as a team if you're a couple and look at what your bills are and try to really look at what is the most important thing to focus on and to pay and work towards that.
00:18:41And do that as a team because what can often happen within the couple the stress can make, you know, go in on each other.
00:18:48What you need to do is really be calm and -- and lean on family, lean on friends and each other.
00:18:54>> Work together on this.
00:18:57>> Why.
00:18:57>> We'll take a break in a second.
00:19:00Anya, are you seeing a lot of cases like this where people are being harassed and violations are mounting at collectors use these ruthless tactics?
00:19:08>> I think people are getting incredibly desperate.
00:19:12We see the bankruptcy rate has spibed.
00:19:15The reason they call you is they know that's how they'll get their money.
00:19:20>> We want to hear your story and what's going on with you.
00:19:23If you are a little behind are you getting those calls and is it over the edge?
00:19:27Are violations happening and you wonder what to do?
00:19:30Call in, love to hear from you.
00:19:321-877-Tell-hln's the phone number.
00:22:06>>> You haven't heard the last of me.
00:22:08And if it takes me a year, takes me two, believe me, I will find you.
00:22:14>> Imagine getting a call like that as companies trying to collect a debt.
00:22:18That's what we hear is happening and happening more as some folks are getting behind in their bills.
00:22:23We're taking your calls and want to hear your stories, 1-877-tell-hln.
00:22:26Arthur with us from ohio.
00:22:28What's your story here?
00:22:29>> Caller: Mike, I have a really simple and very easy phone number and sometimes I'll receive as many as two dozen bill collectors calling my phone.
00:22:39So, I've left a really cute little message for them that if they will leave me their phone number and a time that they're going to sit down to eat with a loved one or sit down to have a romatime with a loved one be sure to leave a message and I'll call them back.
00:23:00>> Good luck fighting that one.
00:23:04Hi, gloria.
00:23:05>> Caller: Hello.
00:23:06>> Comment, question here?
00:23:07>> Caller: Comment.
00:23:08We have been, for three years, getting calls from various bill collecting agencies for a guy that we don't even know who he is.
00:23:17I have been cussed out, they have threatened my paycheck.
00:23:21They have threatened to send someone to my house.
00:23:24When we track down the number, i call back asking for a supervisor and tell them what the story is, that we don't know this guy, anything.
00:23:35To please get our number off and, yet, we still keep getting them.
00:23:41Currently I'm getting about three hang-ups a day.
00:23:43>> Hopefully you haven't given them any information, no address or anything like that.
00:23:49Anya, we hear that, too, they get locked in on a number and not even the person they are looking for.
00:23:55How do you get that erased and away from these collectors?
00:24:00>> You have es these third party collectors basically a call center type of setup, paid hourly wages to makes a many calls as possible.
00:24:08It's not the same person calling again and again, just your number is on some database.
00:24:13Buzz course of action there to get something in writing, send a certified letter to the agency responsible for those calls so you get a guaranteed return on that letter clarifying the situation so you have a record of what's going on.
00:24:25>> Here's a facebook from kelly, writing this, we behind on a leased car payment and one called our next door neighbors and told them while they asked all kinds of questions about us.
00:24:39I was furious, they were brand new neighbors and we hasn't even met them yet.
00:24:43That's illegal, right, you laid that out, a violation, they can't get ahold of your neighbors right?
00:24:49>> They can find your neighbors one time to find out where you are but cannot necessarily share why they are calling or multiple times is that is a violation.
00:25:02>> As people get these calls it mounts, doesn't imt, one call after another begins to grate on people, right in.
00:25:10>> It becomes a pressure cooker of them and again triggers that feeling of hopelessness and helplessness, what I would really encourage people to do in these situations, reach out in their community, find assistance in some way, through their church or synagogue, I mean support to get them back on their feet, a very difficult time.
00:25:38>> Thanks.
00:25:39We'll keep following this and try and get folks some relief out there.
00:25:43Coming up, you might remember tim donaghy, very good referee.
00:25:48He lost it all because he decided to gamble on games.
00:25:51He's joining us, coming up.
00:28:04>>> Welcome back to "prime news" on hln, an ambulance called to tiger woods home again, his mother-in-law rushed to the hospital early this morning with stomach pain, thankfully is okay, back home.
00:28:16New information from a witness that says tiger may have been drinking the day of his accident and also had prescriptions vicodin, ambien, what could this means for the golf pro?
00:28:28We'll take your calls on that, 1-877-tell-hln.
00:28:30All right, now this story.
00:28:32You know, you talk about living a dream, tim donaghy certainly was doing that.
00:28:45Lost it all, started gambling on nba games some he even reffed himself.
00:28:51Next you know he's hooked up with the mob gets caught gambling, ends up in jail and wife leaves him talk about a fall from grace the he joins us now author of the new book telling his story "personal foul" a first-person account of the scandal that rocked the nba.
00:29:08Tim, thanks for joining us.
00:29:10You and I spoke during the break and we hope someone will hear your story and not take that step or try and get away with something and cross a line deep down they know that they shouldn't.
00:29:20Let me ask you that as we talk about your story, do you ever have those moments it is surreal and wonder did I really make those decisions to create this mess?
00:29:30>> Sure.
00:29:30In fact, today I was just talking with some people at the vti group and it's like I put my head on the pillow every night and wonder what I have done and I'm hoping to wake up in the morning and it was just a nightmare.
00:29:46But, unfortunately, it's not, it's reality.
00:29:48>> No, you are living it.
00:29:49I mean, you look, I think one of the first questions is why risk it all?
00:29:53You had a great life.
00:29:55>> I had a super life, but unfortunately when you suffer from an addiction, you do things that you rationally know are wrong and, unfortunately because you suffer from something, it's not until after the fact that you're caught that you wonder how and why you got involved in it.
00:30:16>> You are a gambling addict and started, with, what, gambling on golf games, poker, things like that?
00:30:23>> Golf, poker, casinos, basically anything and everything you could place a bet on.
00:30:27>> Okay.
00:30:28What made you cross the line and gamble on nba games?
00:30:33>> I think that the reason i actually crossed that line is because, to me, it was predictable and it was something that I was easily able to make winning pickson.
00:30:46>> Okay.
00:30:46When you did cross that line, was there -- did you know you were crossing a chasm, jumping the grand canyon here or did you even think twice about it?
00:30:55>> No, I mean, obviously, I knew that I was doing something that was wrong but, you know, it's just something they probably thought I wasn't going to be caught.
00:31:04>> Wow.
00:31:05All right.
00:31:05Tell us how it went down here.
00:31:07Some don't know the story.
00:31:09You basically you have inside information, you are an nba referee and kind of get wind or you figure out after time you've been refusing, what 13 years.
00:31:18>> Yeah.
00:31:19>> You know which calls are going which way.
00:31:21You believe that, right?
00:31:22Give us an example so we all have an understanding here.
00:31:24>> I think when you talk about ref vees in the nba, there's relationships there, there's positive relationships and negative relationships and unfortunately, I used the knowledge of those relationships to place winning bets on nba contests based on the point spread.
00:31:39>> So, when you say "relationships" talking about a referee and player, say the player teed off a ref.
00:31:45So, you kind of have an idea the next game, that referee is probably not going to give him a call, right?
00:31:51>> Not only that.
00:31:51That's a negative relationship.
00:31:53But, there's also a positive relationships, to where people were in contact with owners or players or coaches and -- and even situations where referees would, you know, basically kiss a player prior to the beginning of the game at the captain's meeting.
00:32:09>> On that side, you knew, hey, I'm going to place a bet on that team.
00:32:13>> Sure.
00:32:13>> Things might go their way, right?
00:32:17>> Okay.
00:32:17Give us a specific example.
00:32:18I know you've told the story and let's illuminate it for our viewers, allen iverson, back WITH THE 6ers, BY THE WAY, Fiesty player, threatened a referee and was fined and what happens.
00:32:34>> I think the staff becomes in an uproar he threatened to harm one of the referees and was only fined $25,000 instead of being suspended.
00:32:43So, basically some of the referees got together and decided to do some justice of our own and strictly enforce palming violations and marge jal plays he usually received while going to the basket, we decided we were going to pass on them.
00:32:59>> So, in this case, you bet against him because he's not going to get any breaks, right?
00:33:05>> Correct.
00:33:05>> Let me read the statement from nba commissioner david stern, just to get their side out there.
00:33:11This is in an interview -- concerning your interview with "60 minutes" talking about some of the same topics here, tim donaghy repeated his allegations against former colleagues, nba referees, as well as the nba.
00:33:25Those allegations have been fully investigated by the fbi attorney's office and the government completed its investigation finding the only criminal conduct was that of mr.
00:33:39Donaghy.
00:33:43 pedowitz' review revealed that the nba's core of values, neutrality and atability were not compromised by anyone other than mr. donaghy.
00:33:57Any comment as you hear that statement, tim?
00:33:59You know the nba is obviously at odds with you as you begin to tell your story.
00:34:03>> Sure.
00:34:03That's understandable.
00:34:04They have a billion dollar organization to protect.
00:34:07I would just revert back to the fbi and their investigation to where they understood that there were some situations that arose within the management system of the nba and they advised me that, you know, they're in contact with them and there are drastic steps being made to correct those problems.
00:34:29So, he may want to paint me as the rogue referee at this time.
00:34:33>> Rift.
00:34:33>> But, obviously, they are taking steps to correct some situations that have taken place.
00:34:39>> Okay.
00:34:39When we come back, we'll pick up this story.
00:34:42We have left it off, tim, things going pretty well, you are picking games, about 80% clip, making some good money.
00:34:51The mob gets winds of things and they want in.
00:34:53That's next.
00:37:31>>> Welcome back to "prime news" on hln continuing our conversation with tim donaghy, now convicted felon, he was -- had inside information as he is telling his story, out with a new book called "personal foul" basically information that referees had it out for certain players, may not give them calls they should get.
00:37:49So, he knew how to bet and things were going good on a betting standpoint for tim.
00:37:54He's picking games 80% rate but then how's the mob get involved?
00:38:00>> What happens is, is that the friend that I was placing bets with and I decided that we were going to stop, as we did periodically from time to time.
00:38:10And, unfortunately, I was unaware that this information was being passed along to people that were associated with organized crime and at the time that we decided to stop, they wanted to continue to get that information.
00:38:24So, a high school friend of mine was involved with a guy that was involved with the gambino crime family and they came down and picked me up at the airport, marriott in philadelphia one night.
00:38:37>> And said what?
00:38:39>> And basically said that they were well aware of what was going on and that I needed to give a certain individual my picks for nba games, if not, it would be possible that the nb would find out about it or that somebody would possibly visit my wife and kids in florida.
00:38:58>> Wow.
00:38:59So, threats to the family.
00:39:00You are going to be found out.
00:39:01At that point right there, did conscience take over and say, now's the time to go to the fbi or did that not come into your mind?
00:39:12>> No, I don't think that came into my mind because I knew what I had previously done crossing that line and making the poor choice to bet on nba games to begin with, so I was just hoping that this would pass quickly and by the end of the season it would be over with and I could somehow retain my job.
00:39:26>> Not the case, though.
00:39:27>> No.
00:39:28>> As we look at this, tim, we think, okay you're betting on a game, the mob is betting with you.
00:39:33Did that change your calls?
00:39:35A lot's on the line here and the mob's watching, was that in the back of your mind as you are calling a game?
00:39:42>> I think it was always in the back of my mind but, you know, the situation was I was able to pick these games at a highly successful rate prior to them getting involved and I continued to pick them at a successful rate.
00:39:54And I certainly didn't want to throw up any red flags and be detected by making calls in gals that were incorrect to help a bet win.
00:40:03>> Okay.
00:40:04So, this -- as this is going on, we find out the fbi is tracking the mob here.
00:40:09>> Correct.
00:40:09>> And that's how you're found out.
00:40:12So, what was your feeling when you know, the jig is up, fbi knows, this is coming to an end?
00:40:18>> Right.
00:40:19I'm about ready to play a round of golf.
00:40:22The season's over and I get a call from the guy I was dealing with who was a friend of mine and he told me that the fbi had visited him three times and that he was actually involved in a grand jury hearing.
00:40:35>> So, who -- at this point, now, you -- I'm guessing you've got to come clean with people close to you.
00:40:42Who was the first -- what was the first conversation you had, your father, a respected referee who was so proud of his son following in his footsteps?
00:40:50Let's talk about that conversation.
00:40:52That must have devastated him.
00:40:54>> Certainly did.
00:40:56And unfortunately I called to wish him a happy father's day and right away he detected that in my voice something was wrong and asked me, you know, what the problem was and I didn't plan on telling him at that time but it just happened that it worked out that way.
00:41:11>> Was that an emotional call?
00:41:13>> Absolutely.
00:41:14>> How have you explained this to your little girls, your four daughters?
00:41:19>> You know, it's a situation where I just, my wife and I sat them down and let them know that I made a choice and got involved in something i shouldn't and it was going to cost me my job.
00:41:32>> A couple callers are lined up.
00:41:35Let's get their questions.
00:41:36Marty from virginia, your question here?
00:41:38>> Caller: Yes, I would like to ask tiif he thinks the outcomes of his calls in the games would have affected the standings in the championships and division titles and maybe possibly an nba title over the years or it wouldn't have been taken that far?
00:41:55>> Tim, go ahead and answer that.
00:41:58>> You know, again, the fbi did a thorough investigation and concluded that I didn't make any calls in any games to effect the point spread or to make sure a certain team won.
00:42:09And, also, the nba did an investigation through larry pedowtiz and he also concluded there was no evidence that influenced the outcome of any games.
00:42:20>> Mike from ohio, go ahead.
00:42:22>> Caller: Hey, how are you doing today?
00:42:24>> Good.
00:42:24>> Caller: Okay, my comment is simply as a pro wrestling fan for years I've had arguments with my best friends the fact all sports somewhat seem predetermined.
00:42:38I think it is amazing an nba official got caught and now actually coming to light this may transcend in other sports.
00:42:46We've seen bad calls in football in crucial time, baseball, mma, basketball so it's amazing somebody actually got caught and brings this to light.
00:42:56>> That is quite a theory.
00:42:58We'd like to think, maybe I'm a purist, we still have clean competition going on in the major sports.
00:43:03But, we -- mike's out there and there are other theorists out there that believe this is shedding a light, quite a conversation.
00:43:10That's for another day.
00:43:12Tim, we appreciate your time and, again, as you and I spoke, we hope someone will hear your story and not cross a line they shouldn't and realize that a sin will take you farther than you ever thought you could go.
00:43:23>> Appreciate it.
00:43:24>> Okay.
00:43:25Tim.
00:43:25We appreciate it.
00:43:27Coming up someone who has admitted transgressions, tiger woods, new drama at his house.
00:43:32Beyond that an ambulance called to his home early this morning, rushing his mother-in-law to the hospital.
00:45:54>>> A frightening scene at tiger woods' home in florida today, another scene of concern, middle , again, this time his mother-in-law rushed to the hospital with stomach pain.
00:46:06Thankfully she's been released in good condition but again the hour about the same time tiger had his crash and we're getting new details about that today.
00:46:14A document from the florida highway patrol unveiling a witness told cops tiger had been drinking that day and he had prescriptions for vicodin and ambien.
00:46:25That witness, by the way, possibly his wife elin.
00:46:28Does this explain why tiger wus snoring that night as he was pulled from the suv?
00:46:34As always, we'll take your calls 1-877-tell-hln.
00:46:37Your comments and questions.
00:46:39We welcome back tanya acker -- and carlos diaz with us again a " what happened here, what more can you actual us?
00:46:56>> We heard the 9 # 1 tape a short time ago released to the public and in it you hear tiger's wife sounding very upset in the beginning talking about how her mother collapsed in the bathroom but she continued to talk to the 911 operator, everyone seemed to calm do and the mother seemed doing better.
00:47:13The paramedics were sent as a precaution and possibly an added precaution brought to the hospital here all for abdominal pain according to hospital officials.
00:47:22She was in good condition.
00:47:24They released her about the middle of the afb and she's back at the woods' home this evening.
00:47:28>> Okay.
00:47:29Who is staying at the woods' home right now, do you know, david, is tiger's mother still there?
00:47:35Don't know?
00:47:35>> We don't know for sure and the hospital is very careful to guard everyone's privacy here.
00:47:39They did say that members of the family did visit the mother-in-law while she was in the hospital here but would not confirm if tiger woods was among them or exactly who with the family was visiting here.
00:47:52>> I want to hit on another thing, david, a document from the florida highway patrolling unvaulg, that tiger may have been drinking, he was on ambien, vicodin.
00:48:07What can you tell us about that?
00:48:09>> Reporter: This document indicates police wanted to look into whether or not tiger may have been driving while impaired, dui, when he had his accident.
00:48:21Because of the witness who was probably his wife, she is not described by name, told the investigators officers he had consumed alcohol earlier in the evening, that he had prescriptions for a sleeping aid and a painkiller.
00:48:37But there was no mention he had taken those drugs.
00:48:48This information was taken to a state's attorney, see if they could get a blood test to see if he had something in his system that could have contributed to the accident.
00:49:01The state's attorney said there is not enough information, no subpoena and no further investigation.
00:49:12>> David mattingly.
00:49:17Tanya, people are saying if that happened to me they would have pursued it further?
00:49:23>> I think it is always that issue when a celebrity gets a different standard of justice.
00:49:30I don't want to jump to any conclusions about what he had in his system.
00:49:35It was thanksgiving.
00:49:36We don't know when he consumed alcohol, there are two systems of justice.
00:49:41>> More coming up.
00:52:05>>> Welcome back to "prime news" on hln.
00:52:11Keeping you updated on tiger woods.
00:52:14Elin's mom was rushed to the hospital overnight complaining of stomach pain.
00:52:18We are talking about that and reports a document from the florida highway patrol tiger woods may have been drinking the day of the accident.
00:52:31We are talking about thanksgiving day, he may have had the prescriptions ambien and vicodin.
00:52:44Tanya and carlos.
00:52:45Let's talk about that.
00:52:46If that is the case you would figure in a crash involving property, he was driving while impaired, I would think they would subpoena his records.
00:52:57What would stop that?
00:52:58>> I certainly know of cases where there have been accidents where alcohol was involved and even when there was no injury or secondary victim, police investigate.
00:53:11It is hard to get into the heads of the investigators and why they wouldn't move forward with these records.
00:53:17I have to fall back on the suggestion that he's a famous person and a lot of people like him.
00:53:26His favorables are high.
00:53:28Maybe that played a role.
00:53:30>> Look at a new cnn poll.
00:53:3360% Of people have a favorable opinion of him, down from 84% in '01.
00:53:39That picks up off your point.
00:53:42Let's bring in carlos as we talk about what is going on with tiger and elin.
00:53:50We heard she moved out.
00:53:52What do we know about that?
00:53:54>> We know there was a 911 call from his residence and it was elin.
00:54:00There were reports from swedish painers she purchased a $2 million home in europe and could move the kids over there.
00:54:09I use that tone because there are so many stories.
00:54:13The one thing I can tell you, gatorade dropped tiger.
00:54:19Even though they said they did it before the controversy, the controversy didn't help.
00:54:23This could be the beginning of other companies dropping tiger.
00:54:28I saw an ad for accenture and tiger in the airport.
00:54:32It seemed odd to see that ad and tiger.
00:54:35Maybe that might come to play with other endorse kwmts.
00:54:38>> We talked about that.
00:54:41New endorsements are not going to come his way for quite a while.
00:54:46It is because of the unseemly details.
00:54:50The mistress count, I hate to use that term.
00:54:53It is crass.
00:54:54What is it up to nine, ten?
00:54:56>> It is up to ten.
00:54:58Getting higher every day.
00:54:59Some of these women might not be telling the truth.
00:55:06What about the women who are saying I don't want to say anything because I'm going to go to tiger and say I didn't rat you out.
00:55:13There you go.
00:55:14>> Tanya, let me get your take real quick.
00:55:18How much more will people have to hear, sponsors or fans, before they pull away from him?
00:55:23About 20 seconds go ahead.
00:55:25>> I don't think he will come meetly lose his fan base.
00:55:30He is one of the greatest golfers in the history of the game.
00:55:34He will do a lot of pr.
00:55:36Eventually kobe bryant came back.
00:55:38These guys come back.
00:55:39They do often find a way to rehabilitate themselves.
00:55:42I think he will find a way.
00:55:45>> Guys, thanks again.
00:55:49My colleague jane velez-mitchell 00 eastern.
00:58:08>>> A suspected serial killer is on the loose and on the u.s.
00:58:12Marshal's list of the top 15 most fugitive.
00:58:17Paul mehrige accused of taking out family after thanksgiving dinner.
00:58:23This hour, we're going to hear from those close to the story.
00:58:29Again, a 6-year-old shot multiple times and killed in her sleep.
00:58:35Plus tim donaghy, dream job, making 300 grand.
00:58:43A wife and daughter.
00:58:44Lost it all?
00:58:46For what?
00:58:51Gambling.
00:58:52He gambles on games, gets involved in the mob and gets convicted.
00:58:58That is coming up.
00:58:591-877-Tell-hln is the number.

00:59:34He killed four people, his twin sisters, one of whom was pregnant, 79-year-old aunt and 6-year-old cousin.
00:59:44Cops say mehrige bought four guns.
00:59:50Could he strike again?
00:59:51Take your calls, 1-877-tell-hln.
00:59:54Joining us to talk about it michelle sigona, investigative journalist, check out michellesigona.com.
01:00:05Fbi special agent in charge and michelle galland.
01:00:15Where could paul merhige be?
01:00:19>> He is one of the top 15 most wanted.
01:00:24So many more eyes and hands and money to take him off the streets.
01:00:35As you know, mike, we have covered a lot of cases, a person can change the way they look.
01:00:41They can be a chameleon, but these are his habits.
01:00:49He may be a homosexual.
01:00:55He is known to fake or display certain symptoms of of ocd, frequent bathing or shaving.
01:01:08He displays chronic fatigue syndrome.
01:01:13These are important keys.
01:01:16>> Don clark, how much is that helping an investigator?
01:01:17>> I think that is a tremendous help to the investigator.
01:01:21They have the type of person they are looking for.
01:01:24I want to be clear, whether or not this guy can kill again.
01:01:28Of course he can kill again.
01:01:29When you see things like the autdmatic weapon and so forth, that tells me that law enforcement has to really be careful when they finally approach this guy and they will.
01:01:40They will find this guy.
01:01:41That may be his next target.
01:01:44The family was a special type of very terrible situation.
01:01:47Will he kill again?
01:01:48Of course.
01:01:48And perhaps during the capture time.
01:01:51>> Michelle, when we look at this, we wonder motive.
01:01:54We heard he had a resentment toward family members.
01:01:59>> Right.
01:02:01>> Was the rage nailed at the family or can he send it elsewhere?
01:02:05>> I think at this point he could send that rage anywhere.
01:02:08I think like the profiler spoke about, it may definite I will be focused on the police at the time of capture.
01:02:16What we're talking about here is mass murder and familicide.
01:02:24This individual is a very unstable individual who plotted and methodically planned out this attack on his family.
01:02:36It was fueled by perceived injustice and perceived revenge.
01:02:41It was a revenge murder, multiple murder.
01:02:45>> When espoke to the father of the 6-year-old who tragically died -- >> devastating.
01:02:51>> He sat a couple seats away from the guy thanksgiving dinner.
01:02:56He didn't notice anything.
01:02:57They joked, talked about football, how could someone knowing in their mind what they had planned compartmentalize that?
01:03:09>> He was acting.
01:03:11He made that decision long before making that phone call to his father to come to the thanksgiving dinner.
01:03:17That had been planned out.
01:03:21He was, you know, very focused on accomplishing his goal which is what they believe was primarily killing the sisters which is where the issues had been in the past with some restraining orders and threats and so forth.
01:03:40>> Mike -- >> go ahead.
01:03:41>> Mike, no space whatsoever was this an accident.
01:03:44This was a prepared, planned operation.
01:03:47>> Yeah.
01:03:48We are going to take a quick break.
01:03:50When we come back we are going to talk about that, talk about what he did in the days leading up to these tragic murders on thanksgiving night.
01:03:58We hear the story and it is shocking that he could sit and laugh and joke thanksgiving dinner, couple hours later he is killing four family members.
01:06:34>>> Welcome back to "prime news" on hln.
01:06:38Paul michael merhige is accused of killing four family members after having thanksgiving dinner with them.
01:06:46He shot two others who survived.
01:06:48We have our experts standing by.
01:06:51Taking your calls 1-877-tell-hln.
01:06:52We wonder why.
01:06:54We grapple for motive and no one is doing that more than jim siddon.
01:07:03His 6-year-old daughter was killed multiple times.
01:07:06Here is what he told me moments ago.
01:07:21>> At this point, I mean, he's already proven that he's evil and that, I mean, I've never heard of anyone going in and executing a little girl in her sleep.
01:07:26>> I know it.
01:07:27>> So, if he can do that, he can do anything but he's not sick.
01:07:29He's violent.
01:07:30He's not mental.
01:07:31He's evil.
01:07:33>> A man who is grieving who lost his 6-year-old daughter.
01:07:37How do you make it through this?
01:07:39He gets from lunch to dinner, hour by hour, moment by moment.
01:07:43Could not imagine what he is going through.
01:07:46We will take your calls 1-877-tell-hln.
01:07:49Michelle golland is with us.
01:07:51Do you agree with his description?
01:07:58Pure evil not mental?
01:07:59>> He may have had a mental illness.
01:08:01That does not mean that is a defense for this crime at all.
01:08:05At all.
01:08:06I think this individual is dangerous.
01:08:09He was dangerous before this day and I think that 20 -- he said he had been plotting this for 20 years according to the reports i had seen.
01:08:22>> Okay.
01:08:22>> His obsessive compulsive disorder contributes to that, to the obsession.
01:08:30I can only imagine how long he was plotting this revenge.
01:08:34>> Michelle sigona is with us.
01:08:37What do we know about the days leading up to the tragedy on thanksgiving?
01:08:42We know he bought weapons.
01:08:43>> We know at least 30 days before the shooting he purchased one weapon.
01:08:50We know other weapons were purchased.
01:08:53We don't know exactly when.
01:08:54The video that came out the day before thanksgiving of paul inside of a gun store.
01:09:00What he purchased investigators aren't saying specifically.
01:09:06The murders allegedly happened at thanksgiving day 10:00 p.m.
01:09:12That night.
01:09:12After he was sitting around the table, participating and singing songs.
01:09:17He snuck out and came back in and tragedy struck.
01:09:21>> That methodical planning, don clark, now you know what you are dealing with as an investigator.
01:09:28How do you ferret him out?
01:09:30Are you concerned someone is helping him?
01:09:32>> When you look at someone who has taken the detail and time to plan an operation like that, the capture will be made more difficult.
01:09:45He will be controlling and establishing what he is doing before he does it to keep from getting captured.
01:09:53Nonetheless a good law enforcement entity will seek through the information they've got and eventually he will make a mistake and they will make an arrest.
01:10:04>> We hope so.
01:10:06It can't come too soon.
01:10:08Don, michelle sigona, michelle golland.
01:10:12>>> Coming up, this is horrific, pregnant young woman at a shelter for pregnant young woman.
01:10:20Befriended by a 40-year-old woman.
01:10:22She tried to cut the baby from the 29-year-old's womb.
01:13:03>>> Welcome back.
01:13:04A bizarre and brutal attack at the hands of a wannabe mom.
01:13:09Cops in maryland say this 40-year-old woman veronica deramous trying to cut an unborn baby from a pregnant woman's womb.
01:13:22Unfathomable that is what we are dealing with her.
01:13:24That desire to have a child.
01:13:26What pushed her over the edge?
01:13:29Here is prime new jersey affiliate wjla.
01:13:35>> Reporter: Veronica deramous' desire drove her to do the unthinkable to a 29-year-old woman.
01:13:45After holding the woman captive for days tried to cut out the unborn child with a utility knife.
01:13:54>> It is a bizarre case.
01:13:57>> Reporter: She befriended the victim who was staying at this shelter in southeast washington.
01:14:04The victim left with deramous to get baby clothes.
01:14:14She brought the victim back to her place, duct taped her to a chair, tried to cut the baby from the womb.
01:14:23She got away.
01:14:26Deramous was arrested in arlington county, virginia.
01:14:30>> It is a horrific scenario.
01:14:33It is a shocking case.
01:14:34I have been a prosecutor since 1990 and have never seen anything like this.
01:14:40>> Reporter: The victim and her daughter are expected to recover.
01:14:44This new mother named her child miracle.
01:14:48>> That is fantastic.
01:14:49I said that is a beautiful thing because that is what that is.
01:14:52That is a miracle.
01:14:54>> Indeed it is.
01:14:56 mint, spokesperson from the prince george's police department.
01:15:10Matt, how are mom and baby doing?
01:15:12>> I just spoke to the mother-in-law of the mom in the hospital and she told me that they're doing well.
01:15:19I think the mom herself told a tv station here that she is doing well, too, you know.
01:15:26Police have told me they expect to make a full recovery.
01:15:31>> Do you know what procedures had to take place?
01:15:33>> I know there was a c-section to deliver the baby.
01:15:36I don't know what other procedures had to take place.
01:15:40>> Newborn's name miracle.
01:15:42Very fitting here as we look at what happened.
01:15:46I want to bring in the captain as we figure out what went on here.
01:15:51How did this lady allegedly target the 29-year-old?
01:15:55>> What we know at this point and, of course, the investigation is still ongoing is that the victim met the suspect somehow through a homeless shelter off of wheeler road in southeast washington, d.c.
01:16:09We are not sure if they met at the homeless shelter or met through a third party.
01:16:16The relationship basically was that the suspect was offering baby clothes and baby items to the victim and we believe that is the guise she lured her there with.
01:16:29>> That is how she got her back to her house and attempted this crime.
01:16:33>> Yes.
01:16:34>> Michelle golland, from what you hear, is it that simple of a motive?
01:16:40Want baby that bad you are going to cut an unborn baby from a womb?
01:16:46>> Yeah.
01:16:47Mike, we've seen this so many times before.
01:16:49It is horrific.
01:16:51This is what happens.
01:16:52Often these women have a story where they have set it up that they look pregnant, they want a child.
01:17:00It often is related to keeping a relationship, keeling a male around them as well.
01:17:06They have wanted to have a child with but for whatever reason it hasn't happened.
01:17:11And they lure them and they're delusional at that point, too.
01:17:17They have delusional thinking.
01:17:19No way that is an excuse but that is what can happen.
01:17:23It is horrible.
01:17:24>> Let's go back to matt with " do you know how long veronica deramous targeted this particular woman or was she going to zone in on anybody at that shelter.
01:17:39>> Not exactly.
01:17:40I talked to a sister, a nun at the shelter who said the victim had been there for a long time.
01:17:48She wasn't clear how long the suspect had been there.
01:17:51She said sometime last week the victim told her and other employees she was going to go to baltimore with this woman named stephanie mills and the suspect in this case was using this as an alias.
01:18:05I don't know how long they knew one another before last week.
01:18:08>> Captain, any more on that?
01:18:12How long veronica deramous targeted this woman?
01:18:16>> As far as we know they knew each other approximately a week.
01:18:20>> A week.
01:18:22>> Yes.
01:18:23>> All right.
01:18:24Michelle.
01:18:24How does that fit in?
01:18:26Do you think the planning was going on and this 29-year-old happened into her life?
01:18:32>> Oh, for sure.
01:18:33>> And there was her target?
01:18:35>> I would predict she had been planning this for a while and had figured out the shelter and how she was going to go and do this.
01:18:43They want to find a vulnerable victim.
01:18:47We've seen it in other cases where the victim is vulnerable, at home alone and they befriend them.
01:18:53It also highlights that there's this belief that females don't commit violent crimes.
01:19:00And we do.
01:19:00It does happen.
01:19:06There is an immediate trust that happens that makes this crime easier to execute.
01:19:13>> It's just hard to fathom.
01:19:15So horrific, thankfully it sounds like mom and baby are going to recover from this.
01:19:22>> Yes.
01:19:22>> Emergency c-section performed and little miracle is going to be okay.
01:22:06>>> Welcome back.
01:22:07It is bad enough to lose your job.
01:22:10You have the debt collectors calling, harassing you.
01:22:13We hope you are not going through this.
01:22:16Many are in these tough times.
01:22:18Look at these debt collectors.
01:22:20They are getting abusive, cussing people out on the phone.
01:22:25One woman said it got so bad it literally killed her husband.
01:22:32>> Here's how debt collectors are supposed to treat you on the phone.
01:22:36>> I want to inform you this is an attempt to collect a debt.
01:22:40>> This is how they're not.
01:22:45>> Please call green tree and get your act together to make your payments on the mortgage.
01:22:50>> The call is one of hups her husband got before he died of heart failure.
01:22:57How many phone calls would you get a day?
01:23:00>> Six, seven.
01:23:01>> She is suing green tree services using harassing tactics that broke florida law and she claims led to her husband's death.
01:23:13>> He had trouble sleeping, not eating well.
01:23:16The stress was getting worse and worse.
01:23:18>> The company's general counsel told cnn the collection activity did not lead to his death.
01:23:26The claim is meritless.
01:23:27We deny the content, the number or the timing of the calls had anything to do with him dying in 2005.
01:23:34After a heart attack stanny McCLOUD WENT ON DISABILITY IN 2002.
01:23:39the McClouds fell behind three months on their mortgage payments.
01:23:44The calls began.
01:23:46After explaining to the collector he had been life flighting to the hospital.
01:23:52>> Why don't you have that helicopter pick you up and carry you to the office with the payment.
01:23:59>> That is how these mafia like tactics result in so many money.
01:24:05People are scared.
01:24:06>> Howard says he has hundreds of cases involving other clients.
01:24:10How would you feel if you got a call like this.
01:24:14>> When I see you I'm going to [ bleep ] you up.
01:24:19I want my money and want it now.
01:24:21>> You haven't heard the last of me.
01:24:24If it takes me a year, takes me two, believe me, I will find you.
01:24:30>> We want them gone.
01:24:31We want all of them gone.
01:24:33>> Anna runs a debt collection agency.
01:24:37She says those breaking the law should be gone.
01:24:44>> We are penalized for a few bad apples.
01:24:47At our firm we are in compliance.
01:24:50>> With the recession the number of people in debt has gone up and the complaints against debt collection agencies.
01:24:58Between january and june of this year the federal trade commission received 45,000 complaints, up more than 20% from last year.
01:25:08The ftc has one case pending, referring most complaints to the states for legal action.
01:25:14Attorneys say if you get harassing messages, do what stanley McCloud did, save the tapes.
01:25:24>> Some good advice.
01:25:25A lot of people are getting these types of phone calls.
01:25:29Some even if they don't owe.
01:25:32A collector is stuck on a certain phone call.
01:25:35Now this story.
01:25:37You might remember tim donaghy's fall from grace.
01:25:41Nba referee, he had the life.
01:25:43Gave it all up because he decided to gamble on games.
01:25:47Ends up in prison, involved with the mob.
01:25:49He is going to join us.
01:28:05>>> Welcome back to "prime news" on hln.
01:28:08An ambulance called out to tiger woods' home again.
01:28:12His mother-in-law rushed to the hospital with stomach pain.
01:28:15Thankfully she is okay, back home.
01:28:18We have new information from a witness saying tiger may have been drinking the day of his accident and had prescriptions, vicodin, ambien.
01:28:27What could this mean to the golf pro?
01:28:30We take your calls 1-877-tell-hln.
01:28:32Now this story.
01:28:33You talk about living a dream.
01:28:37Tim donaghy was living that.
01:28:38He was a referee for the nba, made $300,000 a year, a wife, four beautiful daughters but lost it all.
01:28:46He started gambling on nba games.
01:28:48Some games he refed himself.
01:28:51Next thing you know he is hooked up with the mob.
01:28:54Gets caught gambling, ends up in jail, his wife leaves him.
01:28:59Talk about a fall from grace.
01:29:01He is author of the new book, personal foul.
01:29:05A first-person account of the scandal that rocked the nba.
01:29:08Tim thanks for joining us.
01:29:09You and I just spoke on the break.
01:29:11We hope someone will hear your story and not take that step and not try and get away with something and cross a line deep down they know they shouldn't.
01:29:24Let me ask you, is it almost surreal?
01:29:27You are wondering did I really make those decisions to create this mess?
01:29:32>> Sure.
01:29:33In fact, today I was talking with some people at the vti group.
01:29:37It is like I put my head on the pillow every night and wonder who I had done and I'm hoping to wake up in the morning and it was just a nightmare but unfortunately it is not.
01:29:51It is reality.
01:29:51>> You are living it.
01:29:54Why risk it all?
01:29:55You had a great life.
01:29:56>> I had a super life.
01:29:59Unfortunately, when u suffer from an addiction you do things that you rationally know are wrong and unfortunately because you suffer from something it is not until after the fact that you are caught you wonder how and why you got involved in it.
01:30:18>> So you are a gambling addict?
01:30:20It started with golf games, poker?
01:30:23>> Golf, poker, casinos, basically anything and everything you could place a bet on.
01:30:29>> What made you cross the line and gamble on nba games.
01:30:33>> I think that the reason i actually crossed that line is because to me it was predictable and it was something that I was easily able to make winning picks on.
01:30:48>> Okay.
01:30:48When you did cross that line, did you know you were crossing a kasm?
01:30:55You were jumping the grand canyon or did you think twice?
01:30:58>> No.
01:31:00Obviously, I knew I was doing something that was wrong but it was something I probably thought I wasn't going to be caught.
01:31:08>> Tell us how it went down.
01:31:10Some don't know the story.
01:31:12You have inside information.
01:31:14You are an nba referee.
01:31:16You figure out after time, you have been refing and you know what calls are going to go which way.
01:31:24Give us an example.
01:31:25>> When you talk about referees in the nba there's relationships, there are positive relationships and negative relationships.
01:31:33Unfortunately, I used the knowledge of those relationships to place winning bets on nba contests based on the points spread.
01:31:40>> When you say relationships, you are talking about a referee and a player.
01:31:45Let's say the player teed off a ref.
01:31:49The next game that referee is probably not going to give him a call.
01:31:53>> Not only that.
01:31:56That is a negative relationship.
01:31:57There are positive relationships, people in contact with owners or players or coaches or situations where referees would basically kiss a player prior to the beginning of the game at the captain's meeting.
01:32:12>> On that side you knew I'm going to place a bet on that team because things might go their way.
01:32:16>> Sure.
01:32:19Right.
01:32:19>> Give us a specific example.
01:32:22Allen iverson.
01:32:24Iverson back with the sixers by the way, feisty player.
01:32:28He threatened a referee.
01:32:30Was only fined.
01:32:31What takes place from there?
01:32:33>> The referee staff because in an uproar he threatened to do harm to one of the referees and was only fined $25,000 instead of being suspended.
01:32:45Basically some of the referees got together and decided to do some jut of our own and strictly enforce palming violations and martinal plays he usually received while going to the basket.
01:32:59We were going to pass on them.
01:33:01>> In this case you bet against iverson because he is not going to get any breaks, right?
01:33:06>> Correct.
01:33:07>> Let me read a statement from nba commissioner david stern to get their side out there.
01:33:12This is an an interview, concerning your interview with " tim donaghy repeated his allegations against his former colleagues, nba referees as well as the nba.
01:33:27Those allegations have been fully investigated and the government found only criminal conduct was that of mr. donaghy.
01:33:35The nba appointed a chief of criminal division in the u.s.
01:33:40Attorney's office to lead a comprehensive independent review of the nba's officiating program and he revealed that the nba's core values of neutrality were not compromised by anyone other than mr. donaghy.
01:33:55Any comment to that statement, tim, as you hear that?
01:33:59You know the nba is at odds with you.
01:34:01>> That is understandable.
01:34:03They have a billion-dollar organization to protect.
01:34:06I just revert back to the fbi and their investigation to where they understood that there were some situations that arose within the management system of the nba and they advised me that, you know, they're in contact with them and there are drastic steps being made to correct those problems.
01:34:34He may want to paint me as the rogue referee but they are taking steps to correct situations.
01:34:40>> When we come back we are going to pick up the story.
01:34:43We have left it off.
01:34:44You are picking games.
01:34:4680% Clip.
01:34:47Making some good money.
01:34:48The mob gets wind of things and they want in.
01:34:51That's next.
01:37:33>>> Welcome back to "prime news" on hln.
01:37:38We continue our conversation with nba referee tim donaghy.
01:37:43Now convicted felon.
01:37:44He is out with his book " that referees had it out for certain players, may not give them calls.
01:37:55He knew how to bet.
01:37:57He is picking games 80% rate.
01:38:02How does the mob get involved.
01:38:04>> A friend I was placing bets with and I decided we were going to stop as we did periodically from time to time.
01:38:14Unfortunately, I was unaware this information was being passed along to people associated with organized crime.
01:38:22At the time we decided to stop they wanted to continue to get that information.
01:38:26So a high school friend of mine was involved with a guy that was involved with the gambino crime family and they came down and picked me up at the airport marriott in philadelphia one night.
01:38:41>> And said what?
01:38:43>> And basically said they were wl aware of what was going on and I needed to give a certain individual my picks for nba games.
01:38:52If not it would be possible that the nba would find out about it or someone would possibly visit my wife and kids in florida.
01:39:00>> Wow.
01:39:02Threats to the family.
01:39:02You are going to be found out.
01:39:05Did conscience take over and say now it is time to go to the nba?
01:39:14>> No.
01:39:15I knew what I had done in making the poor choice to bet on nba games to begin with.
01:39:20I was hoping this would pass quickly and by the end of the season it would be over with and I could somehow retain my job.
01:39:28>> Not the case?
01:39:29>> No.
01:39:30>> As we look at this, tim, you are betting on a game.
01:39:34The mob is betting with you.
01:39:37Did that change your calls?
01:39:38A lot is on the mind and the mob is watching.
01:39:41Is that in the back of your mind?
01:39:44>> I think it was always in the back of my mind.
01:39:47The situation was I was able to pick these games at a highly successful rate prior to them getting involved.
01:39:55I continued to pick them at a successful rate.
01:39:57I didn't want to throw up any red flags and be detected to make calls that were incorrect to help a bet win.
01:40:07>> So we find out the nba is tracking the mob here.
01:40:11>> Correct.
01:40:11>> That is how you are found out.
01:40:14What is your feeling when you know jig is up?
01:40:17Fbi knows.
01:40:18This is coming to an end?
01:40:20>> I'm about ready to play a round of golf.
01:40:23The season's over and I get a call from the guy I was dealing with who was a friend of mine and he told me the fbi had visited him three times and that he was involved in a grand jury hearing.
01:40:39>> So who, at this-point, I'm guessing you have to come clean with the people close to you?
01:40:47What was the conversation you had?
01:40:51With your father, a respected referee, so proud of his son following in his footsteps that must have devastated him?
01:41:01>> It certainly did.
01:41:02I called to wish him a happy father's day.
01:41:06He detected something in my voice that was wrong.
01:41:10He asked me what the problem was.
01:41:12I didn't plant on telling him.
01:41:14But it worked out that way.
01:41:17>> Is that an emotional call?
01:41:19>> Absolutely.
01:41:20>> How do you explain this to your four daughters.
01:41:24>> My wife and I sat them down and let them know I made a terrible choice and got involved in something I shouldn't have and it was going to cost me my job.
01:41:34>> A couple of callers are lined up.
01:41:37Marty is with us in virginia.
01:41:39Your question here.
01:41:40>> Caller: Yes.
01:41:42I would like to ask tim if he thinks the outcome of his calls in the game would have affected the standings and championship and division titles and maybe an nba title over the years or if it wouldn't have been taken that far.
01:41:57>> Tim, go ahead and answer that.
01:42:00>> The fbi did a thorough investigation and concluded that I didn't make any calls in any games to affect the point spread or make sure a certain team won and also the nba did an investigation through larry pedowitz and he concluded there was no evidence I influenced the outcome of any games.
01:42:21>> Mike in ohio.
01:42:21Go ahead.
01:42:24>> Caller: Hey, how are you doing today?
01:42:26>> Good.
01:42:28>> Caller: My comment is as a pro wrestling fan.
01:42:31For years I have had arguments that the fact all sports somewhat seem to be predetermined.
01:42:38I think it is an amazing an nba official got caught and it is coming to light this may transcend into other sports.
01:42:46We have seen bad calls in crucial times, baseball, mma, basketball.
01:42:54It is amazing someone got caught and brings this to light.
01:42:58>> That is quite the theory.
01:43:00We would like to think, maybe I'm a purist, that we still have clean competition in the major sports.
01:43:07Mike is out there and other theorists believe this is shedding a light.
01:43:11Quite a conversation.
01:43:12That is for another day.
01:43:13Tim donaghy, we appreciate your time.
01:43:16As you and I spoke we hope someone will hear your story and not cross a line they shouldn't and realize a sin will take you farther than you ever thought you could go.
01:43:28>> Appreciate it.
01:43:29>>> Someone who admitted transgressions, tiger woods, new drama at his house.
01:43:36Beyond that, an ambulance called to his home this morning rushing his mother-in-law to the hospital.
01:45:54>>> Welcome back to "prime news" on hln.
01:45:58A frightening scene at tiger woods' home in florida.
01:46:01Another concern, middle of the night again.
01:46:042 A.m. again.
01:46:05This time his mother-in-law rushed to the hospital with stomach pain.
01:46:10Thankfully she has been released in good condition.
01:46:13The 2:00 a.m. hour.
01:46:15About the same time tiger had his crash.
01:46:18A document from the florida highway patrol a witness told cops he had been drinking and had prescriptions for ambien and vicodin.
01:46:32That witness maybe elin.
01:46:37Does that explain why tiger was snoring as he was pulled from the suv?
01:46:44Tanya aker, david mattingly and carlos diaz.
01:46:49He is a correspondent for " david, give us the latest on tiger woods' mother-in-law.
01:46:59What happened?
01:46:59>> Reporter: We heard the 911 tape and in it you hear tiger's wife sounding very upset talking about her mother collapsing in the bathroom.
01:47:09As she continued to talk to the 911 operator, the mother calmed down.
01:47:14Everyone seemed to be doing better.
01:47:16The paramedics were sent as a precaution and possibly as an added precaution she was brought to the hospital.
01:47:24It was all for abdominal pain according to officials.
01:47:28They released her and she is back at the woods' home this evening.
01:47:33>> Who is staying at the woods' home?
01:47:37Is tiger's mother still there?
01:47:39>> We don't know for sure.
01:47:41The hospital is careful to guard emp's privacy.
01:47:45They said members of the family did visit the mother-in-law in the hospital but would not confirm if tiger woods was among them or exactly who was visiting here.
01:47:59said, a witness that tiger may have been drinking, that there was -- he was on ambient, vicodin.
01:48:07What more can you tell us about that?
01:48:09>> This document indicates that police wanted to look into whether or not tiger may have been driving while impaired.
01:48:16Dui.
01:48:18When he had his accident.
01:48:21Because of what the witness told him, the witness who was probably his wife, she's not described by name, but told the investigating officers there at the scene that he had consumed alcohol earlier in the evening, that he had prescriptions for a sleeping aid and a painkiller.
01:48:39But there's no mention there that he had actually taken those drugs, and this information was taken to a states attorney.
01:48:45The investigators wanting to know if they could get a blood test, see tiger's personal medical records to see if perhaps he had something in his system that might contribute to this accident.
01:49:00The state attorney looked at this and said there's not enough information to go forward with that, there's not going to be any subpoena.
01:49:07So no further criminal investigation and that's where it ended.
01:49:10>> David, thanks.
01:49:15Real quick, tonya, people think wait a minute, if that happened to me in those circumstances and it's not tiger woods, they would have pursued it further.
01:49:22Your thoughts on that?
01:49:23>> Well, I think you all have that issue when a celebrity seems to be getting a different standard of justice.
01:49:29We've seen that happen far too often.
01:49:32I don't want to jump to any conclusions about what he had in his system.
01:49:37It was thanksgiving, so we don't know when he consumed this alcohol, when during the day it was.
01:49:41But there are two systems of justice.
01:49:42>> Stay with us.
01:52:09>>> We'll keep you updated on tiger woods.
01:52:12More news coming from his home.
01:52:14His mother-in-law, elin's mom was rushed to the hospital with stomach pains.
01:52:20She's okay.
01:52:21Also a document from the florida tiger patrol that tiger woods may have been drinking the day of the accident.
01:52:26We're talking back into thanksgiving day into the wee hours of that night early friday morning.
01:52:31He may have had the prescriptions ambien, vicodin.
01:52:36We'll spoking with tonya acker.
01:52:43Let's look at that and why it wouldn't be pursued furtherer.
01:52:48If that is the case, you would figure, you know, a crash involving property, if he was driving while impaired I would think they would be able to subpoena his records.
01:52:59>> I certainly know of cases where there's been accident where is alcohol has been involved.
01:53:03Even if there was no physical injury or secondary victim, if there's property damage, usually that's something the police would investigate.
01:53:09I think here, you know, again, it's really hard to get into the heads of the investigators.
01:53:14You know, why they wouldn't move forward with these records.
01:53:17I just have to maybe fall back on the suggestion that he's a famous person and a lot of people like him.
01:53:22His favorables are still really high.
01:53:25And they're really high particularly among men.
01:53:27So I think maybe that played a role.
01:53:29>> Maybe.
01:53:30You look at a new cnn poll.
01:53:3360% Of people still have a favorable opinion of him.
01:53:36That's just down from 84% back in '01.
01:53:40That picks up on your point, tonya.
01:53:43Let's bring in carlos on this.
01:53:46Reports that elin moved out.
01:54:08What do you make of that?
01:54:09>> Well, she called from the home so we know she hasn't moved out.
01:54:13But gatorade has dropped tiger.
01:54:16Even though they said they decided to drop him before the controversy, this controversy couldn't have helped, and that might be -- you know, this could be the beginning of other companies dropping tiger.
01:54:26I saw an ad when I landed here in new york for accenture with tiger in the airport.
01:54:32It seemed odd to me to see that ad up and see tiger.
01:54:35Maybe that might come to play in other endorsements.
01:54:38>> Right, we said that.
01:54:40Definitely new endorsements aren't going to come his way for quite a while.
01:54:45It's because of some of the unseemly details.
01:54:48The misstress count -- and i hate to use those terms, it's somewhat crass -- is what?
01:54:55Nine?
01:54:55Ten?
01:54:57>> It's up to ten when I count and it's getting higher every day.
01:55:00Some of these women might not be telling the truth and there might be some women out there -- think about this.
01:55:05What about the women out there that are saying I'm not going to say anything because I want to go to tiger in the next few weeks and say hey irk didn't rat you out.
01:55:13There you go.
01:55:15>> Tonya, let me get your take real quick.
01:55:17Carlos and I have talked about it.
01:55:19How much more will people have to hear, sponsors or fans before they full away from him?
01:55:23About 20 seconds.
01:55:23Go ahead.
01:55:25>> I don't think he's going to completely ever lose his fan base.
01:55:29He's one of the greatest golfers in the history of the game.
01:55:32That's going to remain intact.
01:55:33I think he will do a lot of pr.
01:55:36Kobe bryant b came back.
01:55:38These guys come back.
01:55:40They do often find a way to rehabilitate themselves.
01:55:43I think he'll find a way.
01:55:46>> Thanks again.
01:55:46Carlos, tonya.
01:55:4800 eastern.
