00:00:00You guys so much.
00:00:01>> Thank you.
00:00:02>> All right.
00:00:07>> Narrator: Amy, the victim, romeo carter's, fiancée, agrees to come in.
00:00:11She tells investigators about romeo's roommate, hector, which may provide a lead.
00:01:30Salvatore and donovan look for photos of men with the nickname "e" in the police database.
00:01:36They then show the photos to james, a friend of romeo's.
00:01:40He did not see the crime, but knew "e," the potential suspect, from years before.
00:05:21>> Received a call of a stabbing that occurred on main street.
00:05:24Our victim is romeo carter.
00:05:25He lived with his fiancée, amy.
00:05:26What do you call him, "e"?
00:05:27>> I was just told that his name was "e.">> you sure?
00:05:57>> Okay, this stage in the investigation, we're gonna process the large knife that was found in the kitchen of apartment 4 on the stove.
00:06:05I'm gonna use the black silk powder for any type of latent fingerprints.
00:06:16No indication of any latent-type fingerprints are located on either side of this knife.
00:06:24>> How'd you make out today?
00:06:25>> Our victim, romeo, and his fiancée, amy, were staying with hector in apartment 4.
00:06:30Apparently hector meets this " and this suspect, "e," ends up staying with hector, amy, and the victim in apartment 4.
00:06:37He basically becomes belligerent toward everybody in the apartment.
00:06:39It comes to the point where they got to physically remove "e," get into a physical confrontation, and kind of throw him out of the apartment.
00:06:45Today, he came back over.
00:06:47We're not sure why.
00:06:49>> Amy and the victim are coming back from the store.
00:06:52As they're going up the stairs, " the victim and "e" start getting into another fight.
00:06:57Amy says she ran out to the front door, where her other friend, cynthia, was hanging out.
00:07:03>> There's a silver or gray chrysler out there.
00:07:06There's a male black driver.
00:07:07And when amy comes down for help, this driver runs up the stairs.
00:07:12>> The next thing amy remembers is "e" and this other male black from the car that was out front come running out of the apartment building.
00:07:19>> Cynthia sees that car leave down main street.
00:07:24>> So, we don't know who the driver of that car is, right?
00:07:26>> No.
00:07:27We don't know what his role was when got up there is unclear, 'cause nobody actually sees the stabbing.
00:07:31>> Anybody check the city cameras to see if the car was seen leaving the front of the building?
00:07:36>> Yeah, we'll do that tomorrow.
00:07:37>> The other weird thing is -- I mean, this "e" character.
00:07:39That's all they know him as.
00:07:40They don't have a first name.
00:07:41They don't have the last name.
00:07:43>> All right, now the big question mark, obviously, is who is "e"?
00:07:46And we got to find out who "e" is.
00:07:49>> That's pretty much it.
00:07:51How can all these people not KNOW "E's" REAL NAME?
00:07:53>> Doesn't make sense.
00:07:54>> That's something we're gonna have to jump on quick, see if we can come up with a full name.
00:08:03Hey, everyone, I got the video from the city cameras.
00:08:06We got information on the suspect vehicle -- gray or silver, maybe a chrysler product car.
00:08:11We're looking to see if we can capture that on any of the cameras.
00:08:14>> How many cameras do we got going?
00:08:16>> 50.
00:08:53Yeah.
00:09:07Right here's one.
00:09:13>> Real close.
00:09:14>> Let me print a photo of that.
00:09:16>> Hopefully it will be the car.
00:09:21>> Narrator: Donovan and salvatore rush to see cynthia, the witness from the apartment building who saw the suspect, "e," flee in a silver car.
00:09:51Police put out a be-on-the-lookout alert for a silver dodge charger, and salvatore and donovan head to the autopsy.
00:10:00>> Hey, doc.
00:10:01I was wondering if you could give us some info on the autopsy from romeo carter.
00:10:05>> Sure, all right.
00:10:06He's got a collection of five stab wounds or sharp-force wounds in him, plus a couple of scratch marks.
00:10:12On his right shoulder, he's just got a superficial cut.
00:10:17And then just in from his left ..
00:10:22But it doesn't get through the ribs.
00:10:25And then on his left hip, he's got another one.
00:10:27That one hits the pelvis.
00:10:30Doesn't strike any major blood vessels on the way.
00:10:33On the front of him, he's got a cut across the inside surface of his left thumb.
00:10:39And then he's got a lethal wound on his right chest.
00:10:44That wound cuts through the ..
00:10:48Goes through the right side of the heart -- in and out -- and then hits the interior vena cava and then comes to a stop just in front of the spinal comn.
00:11:01>> From the injuries, is there anything that you can tell about the suspect?
00:11:05>> No, no.
00:11:06He could be right-, left-handed, who knows how tall.
00:11:09>> Any information we can glean from what type of knife it might have been orhat kind of knife?
00:11:13>> Yeah, yeah.
00:11:13Actually, I've got two things.
00:11:14One, it's made by a single-bladed knife, so kitchen knives and stuff like that, as opposed to a hunting knife or a bowie knife.
00:11:21And the other thing is -- the stab wound into the chest, between the skin surface and where it terminates, it's a 4 1/2-inch length.
00:11:30So the 4 1/2-inch depth is probably a good measure of how long your blade is.
00:11:35It would be a nice size for a kitchen-table steak knife kind of a deal.
00:11:39>> All right, doc.
00:11:40Appreciate your help.
00:11:42>> Anytime.
00:11:45>> Well, now we got some idea what kind of knife we're looking for.
00:11:48>> It sounds like it's your basic kitchen steak knife.
00:11:52>> Narrator: Donovan and ore headthe home of mamie carter, the victim's adopted mother.
00:11:58>> I know we talked to you over the phone.
00:12:00>> Yeah.
00:12:01I adopted romeo when he was about 6 years old, 5 or 6.
00:12:06And so, romeo lived with me up until he got about 15 1/2, going on 16.
00:12:10Then he decided he wanted to run on orange street, and I wasn't going for that.
00:12:15And I said, "being as you're a teenager, you don't need to be 00 at " >> do you know anything about his biological mom or dad?
00:12:23>> I knew his biological mother, because I was the one who used to take them to see her when she was in prison.
00:12:28>> Oh, okay.
00:12:29>> She's in there now.
00:12:31>> Okay.
00:12:31>> So that's about all I can give you about him.
00:12:34Do the best you can.
00:12:35That's all you can do.
00:12:37Yeah.
00:12:38>> Okay.
00:12:40She told us when he got to his teenage years, that's when, of course, the streets kind of took over his life and she kind of lost control of him.
00:12:48She's hoped that there's some justice.
00:12:50That'll be some kind of closure for her.
00:12:55>> Narrator: Salvatore and donovan get a break.
00:12:58They found hector, romeo's roommate, and he's agreed to come in.
00:13:57Salvatore and donovan track down the cab company hector said "e" used.
00:14:03>> Is it here?
00:14:04>> Yeah.
00:14:04>> We're looking to try to find a fare -- state street between 00 in the morning, I would say.
00:14:27>> Got it.
00:14:29>> The owner of the company here is getting ahold of one of the drivers, see if he can recall who he picked up, see if it fits our suspect description and where they went to.
00:15:13>> Narrator: Salvatore and donovan head to the apartment building where their suspect, "e," may be staying.

00:41:23I think if he goes into the house, it's probably gonna be him.
00:45:18>> Now that we have this target location, we're going to send out a team of our undercovers to surveil this location.
00:45:24?
00:45:25I think if he goes into the house, it's probably gonna be him.
00:45:32He's walking right on by.
00:45:33Doesn't quite match the description.
00:45:35I'd say it's not him.
00:45:40Undercovers are deployed around the suspect's target location, and we're gonna turn it over to them.
00:45:47>> Narrator: Salvatore and donovan try a new tactic to locate eric ford.
00:45:51>> As of right now, we haven't spotted our suspect.
00:45:54We plan on stimulating this surveillance itself by maybe knocking on the door of this location and see if that gets some more activity on the phone.
00:46:01Or, if the person was in there, maybe he would try to leave after we left, and we could grab him that way.
00:46:27>> We just met with the family of our suspect, eric ford.
00:46:31They kind of indicate that he is in town.
00:46:35Our obvious goal is to locate eric as soon as possible.
00:46:41rator: INVESTIGATORS WIDEN The search for eric ford, hitting every known location for him.
00:46:51>> Tony, there's a white van parked behind the place.
00:46:54>> 10-4.
00:46:54We got another brown small car out the front, too.
00:47:10>> You know what?
00:47:11There's a male black with a black hooded sweatshirt over there.
00:47:14>> All right, guys, I think we got him right here in the parking lot.
00:47:21>> Any crap on you? any weapons?
00:47:23>> Nope.
00:47:58>> All right, he's in booking right now.
00:48:00He lawyered up.
00:48:00What do we have in terms of the case without a confession?
00:48:04>> Ford has been identified by witnesses as the person who stabbed carter.
00:48:07So, you know, it's not our best scenario, but we should be all right.
00:48:10>> I think one of the major things that kind of put it together for us was the silver charger.
00:48:15That's the getaway vehicle.
00:48:16We were able to connect that to eric ford through robert martin.
00:48:19And it turns out that martin is ford's nephew.
00:48:21>> Dave, how about the evidence in this?
00:48:23>> We're working on a lot of stuff right now.
00:48:25The blood that was outside the apartment just outside the door -- that's pretty much indicative of where the fight began.
00:48:30We believe that's the victim's bloodstains in the stairwell.
00:48:33We've collected those stains.
00:48:34Although, we haven't done any more processing with that, but we have them if need be.
00:48:38>> How about the car?
00:48:39>> Yeah, we looked at the car.
00:48:40We used a couple different processes on that.
00:48:42That bluestar, if you remember -- we used that to try to locate some blood.
00:48:45But everything has been negative so far on that, nothing to the suspect at this time.
00:48:49>> All right, so based on all the witness statements and the evidence at the scene, what are your theories as to what happened?
00:48:54>> We think the victim, romeo carter, returned home from the store, entered the apartment.
00:49:00The suspect, eric ford, is coming dowthe stairwell.
00:49:03Romeo and eric confront each other.
00:49:05They have some type of argument ensues.
00:49:07Eric produces a knife, which we believe he brought into the apartment building with him.
00:49:12He ends up stabbing romeo in the chest.
00:49:16Romeo, at that point, breaks free.
00:49:20And we think what happens is -- he's stabbed two more times in the back.
00:49:26There's some blood on the walls as he's going up that third level of the stairwell.
00:49:32Knocks on apartment 8, and then he proces to collapse in apartment 8.
00:49:36While this is going on, amy is running downstairs to get cynthia and cynthia's friend.
00:49:41The suspect's nephew, robert martin, realized there's some kind of commotion, runs into the apartment building.
00:49:49He eventually ends up with eric ford, and they proceed to leave the apartment.
00:49:57They get in the dodge charger, and they flee west on east main street.
00:50:04>> You guys got a statement from martin.
00:50:06You think he was involved at all?
00:50:07>> No.
00:50:08At this point, we feel strongly that robert martin's not involved in the stabbing.
00:50:12We have a solid case against ford.
00:50:14We're ready to charge him with intentional murder.
00:50:16>> Good. nice job.
00:50:17>> All right.
00:50:18>> All right.
00:50:19>> Nice job.
00:50:23>> It's a relief off our back -- my partner and I and the whole unit that helped us with this thing and all the other help that we had.
00:50:29It's just a nice feeling to have our suspect in custody and ready to go for the next phase.
00:50:35Eric now will be escorted to booking, where he will be processed by our monroe county jail, and he will be arraigned tomorrow in rochester city court.
