00:00:38I'm james brown.
00:00:39Welcome to a special a.f.c.
00:00:41Divisional playoff edition of "the nfl today" presented by southwest airlines.
00:00:46As we start the divisional weekend, there are four terrific games over the next two days, and we'll cover them all.
00:00:51The playoffs begin this afternoon with the baltimore ravens against the pittsburgh steelers right here on cbs.
00:00:58I'm joined by our all-pro studio 43 squad, they will be handsome dan marino, coach bill cowher, shannon sharpe, and boomer esiason.
00:01:06You know what?
00:01:06You guys are so fired up, guess who was trash talking to us?
00:01:10Your guy shannon all week long.
00:01:12Boomer: of course he was.
00:01:13This is what you would expect.
00:01:15We have four heavyweight teams getting ready for rematch central three times all yearlong.
00:01:22Neither one of these teams likes each other.
00:01:25 all the talking is taking place on the a.f.c. side.
00:01:29They play each other twice a year.
00:01:30The third time in three years that the ravens have played the steelers three times.
00:01:34You're going to get great match-ups.
00:01:36 side hasn't done a lot of talking, they'll play well today.
00:01:40 with the rematches, with the talking, the biggest thing is the emotion.
00:01:43The emotion of this game.
00:01:44You cannot allow the emotion to alter your focus and your decision-making.
00:01:49That to me is where playoff experience will play a very upper hand with the coaches and the players on a trickle-down effect.
00:01:58Today you want to play your game.
00:01:59You want to be loose, but you've got to stay focused.
00:02:02That's where the trash talking the alter that.
00:02:04 when you have teams that know each other like this, there's no secrets.
00:02:07You know them, they know you.
00:02:09You've got to be patient in these kind of games.
00:02:12Not make mistakes.
00:02:13Sometimes you want to throw a wrinkle in there.
00:02:15Maybe a trick play early so you get a quick score.
00:02:18 you stayed calm and focused, coach?
00:02:21Bill: absolutely in.
00:02:21The midst of the storm, you have to be the one to give the calm, and lead.
00:02:26 the quarterback does that.
00:02:28 it helps to have a good quarterback.
00:02:30James: looking at the a.f.c.
00:02:31Playoff picture, the new york jets visit the top-seeded new england patriots tomorrow, but today, it's baltimore taking on number two pittsburgh.
00:02:38And for the latest on this match-up, let's go out live to greg gumbel and dan dierdorf.
00:02:43Hello, greg.
00:02:45Greg: hello, j.b.
00:02:46We thank you and we welcome you to the land of the terrible towel.
00:02:50And they will be out in force here at heinz field as the steelers take on the baltimore ravens.
00:02:56Greg gumbel along with dan dierdorf.
00:02:58Welcome to pittsburgh, everyone.
00:02:59A little medical business first.
00:03:00The flu bug for the ravens.
00:03:03It has been bothering that team.
00:03:05 it's been going through the locker room fople weeks.
00:03:08Ray rice had the stomach flu.
00:03:10He woke up this morning feeling a lot better and he's going to start and play today.
00:03:13The week off for the steelers was a great benefit to the sore achilles of their all-pro safety troy polamalu.
00:03:19He feels fine.
00:03:19He'll be a factor today.
00:03:21 these teams met twice during the regular season, being division rivals.
00:03:26Each team won once.
00:03:28Pretty good football games.
00:03:31 you better believe they were.
00:03:32Let's go to week four.
00:03:33This was the last game of roethlisberger's suspension in pittsburgh.
00:03:37Flacco hits houshmandzadeh for the come-from-behind touchdown that gives baltimore the win.
00:03:41And then that strip sack by polamalu.
00:03:47Puts the steelers in great field position.
00:03:50Roethlisberger hits isaac redman and there's a come-from-behind win.
00:03:53They play it very closely.
00:03:56 that last game, technically ben roethlisberger was a winner, but it was a pretty tough day for him.
00:04:01 he took a lefte from haloti ngata in the first quarter.
00:04:06It just splattered his nose.
00:04:08As physical as these two teams are today, I suspect somebody is leaving here today with their nose out of joint, if not literally, then figuratively.
00:04:17 baltimore and pittsburgh, two rough, tough physical teams that don't much caor each other, coming up.
00:04:22J.b., back to you.
00:04:24James: thank you.
00:04:25Boy, boom, what a match-up.
00:04:26 how good are the baltimore ravens when their quarterback plays like he did last week?
00:04:31That's something that the ravens have never had the benefit of.
00:04:33They've always won in spite their quarterbacks.
00:04:35They've always won because of their defense and their running games.
00:04:40Now joe flacco became, I think, of age last week against the kansas city chiefs.
00:04:44The other thing I will say, that sack that troy polamalu had against him in that last game in baltimore.
00:04:49That was the fault of michael oher, their left tackle.
00:04:52He was supposed to block him, he did not get the call to go all the way out to get him.
00:04:56That will not be a factor this game.
00:04:58You learn from your mistakes.
00:05:01 crowd noise could be a factor.
00:05:04 and the guy that will be in charge of taking care of joe flacco is troy polamalu.
00:05:10He's taking some time off.
00:05:11He had the bye week to rest.
00:05:13If he takes a numbing agent in that achilles after halftime, the long layoff, 15 minutes, to come back out in the second half, the pittsburgh steelers blitz their two middle linebackers more than any team in the national football league.
00:05:26James farrior, lawrence timmons.
00:05:27Look at them trying to get to joe flacco.
00:05:30We know the outside rushers will be taking care of him.
00:05:33 one guy playing this game that got hurt in the first play of the last game was todd heap.
00:05:39He went down with a hamstring.
00:05:41He's back.
00:05:42Last week, 10 catches, over 100 yards.
00:05:44I think he's an integral part of that offense.
00:05:46To me one of the biggest keys is what kind of pressure can pittsburgh get with woodley and harrison and not have to blitz troy polamalu.
00:05:53I think they need him in the secondary to help with some of the match-ups out there with boldin, houshmandzadeh, and heap.
00:05:59If they can get pressure with the four guys up front and not have to blitz, that's a big advantage.
00:06:05 one of the things the pittsburgh steelers need to take advantage of is running the football.
00:06:09We know it's hard to run on baltimore, but kansas city ran the ball on the ravens.
00:06:15If they can get something out of mendenhall, 60, 70 yards.
00:06:19The baltimore ravens will have their ears pinned back going after roethlisberger.
00:06:23That will help a lot.
00:06:25 they have to do it even if they don't have success.
00:06:27Dan: be patient with them.
00:06:29 but the ravens have trouble with speed backs.
00:06:33James: the passion is palpable.
00:06:34You guys are ready to go.
00:06:36All right, folks.
00:06:37 side of the playoffs, seattle visits number two chicago tomorrow, while tonight green bay faces top-seeded atlanta.
00:06:49Sam ryan joins us with more.
00:06:50Sam: hello to you, j.b.
00:06:52Falcons head coach mike smith wanted to keep this week as normal as possible for his players.
00:06:57Well, it was anything but, as four to six inches of snow and ice blanketed the area, basically parolizing the city, forcing schools to close all week.
00:07:08Defensive end john abraham, he even slid off the road on his way to practice earlier in the week, so a teammate had to pick him up.
00:07:16Players found themselves car pooling to and from practice this week.
00:07:19Mike smith spent the week staying in the practice facility in the dorms.
00:07:23As far a concerned, starting nickel back brian williams has been bothered by a knee injury.
00:07:29He hasn't practiced in two weeks so he will likely not be able to go today.
00:07:32That means chris owens will start in his place.
00:07:36Owens was the starting nickel back for the falcons in the beginning of the season.
00:07:40The packers come in on the short week, but some encouraging news on defense as they try to stop michael turner and the falcons' running game.
00:07:50Linebacker clay matthews, they tell me with his chin, is good to go today, as is colin jenkins with the calf injury.
00:07:56Both will go today.
00:07:57One other packers note, j.b.
00:07:58They had to stay nearly an hour outside of the city because of a hotel shortage with the upcoming poultry and egg expo.
00:08:07?
00:08:09 we know that brings up the age old, what came first, the egg or the chicken?
00:08:18Shannon was like, was abraham's s.u.v. in a shop?
00:08:23Dan, talk about this match-up.
00:08:24 atlanta are so tough at home, guys.
00:08:26Matt ryan, when I look at him, they're going to try to run the football with michael turner.
00:08:32That's their game plan, especially against green bay that can put up a lot of points.
00:08:35And to me, look for early in this game no-huddle offense with matt ryan spreading them out, trying to take green bay out of the blitz.
00:08:43The zone blitz package they like to run.
00:08:47 green bay's defense, the first time they played against atlanta, the longest pass play they gave up was 21 yards.
00:08:54Roddy white had some catches, but there was no big plays.
00:08:56That is the key for the green bay defense.
00:08:58And really on their offense, and boom you mentioned this before, they've got this guy james starks now.
00:09:04They've now all of a sudden got a running game that they did not have before.
00:09:08Dan: that was one week.
00:09:11 fresh legs, that's all that matters.
00:09:13 I think what makes the falcons so tough at home is balance.
00:09:16I think they're the most balanced team in the national football league because they can run it so well.
00:09:20If you look at matt ryan, I know he's 20-2 at home, but you look at those games he's won, michael turner has had big days.
00:09:27I think in order for the falcons to win this game, michael turner must have a big day.
00:09:31I do not believe matt ryan can throw for 300-plus yards and beat the green bay packers.
00:09:37Dan: that's not what they do.
00:09:39 aaron rodgers over the last eight games has thrown 19 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
00:09:45They are explosive.
00:09:46And sam touched on it.
00:09:48Brian williams, the cornerback, is out for this game.
00:09:51You have three wide receivers on the field.
00:09:52You have one of the strongest-armed quarterbacks that this league has ever seen, and he is on fire as of late.
00:09:57So I'm telling you right now, this is going to be a match-up between these two great young quarterbacks and I think high scoring, definitely.
00:10:04 you were making a point it's not their game, meaning?
00:10:08 they're trying to be balanced.
00:10:10That's what I'm saying.
00:10:12 this year, the nfl is inaugurating an award to honor exemplary football coaches at all levels, from the nfl down to college, high school, and even youth football.
00:10:22This new annual tribute has been named the don shula nfl coach of the year award in honor of the winningest coach in league history.
00:10:31Each nfl team has submitted a nominee who will be judged not only for on-field success, personal character, and integrity, but also for the influence on the lives of their players and for commitment to the community at large.
00:10:43The don shula award will be presented at the super bowl.
00:10:47 this award should be named after don shula.
00:10:51Guy was such a positive impact on so many coaches and players and was such a great example to so many.
00:10:57 still ahead right here on divisional playoff edition of "the nfl today," it's been an eventful season for the steelers with ben, hines, and harrison.
00:11:08But is pittsburgh poised for another super bowl run?
00:11:11Plus, they called him lovie, though it hasn't been all hugs and kisses in chicago for smith and the bears following their super bowl slump.
00:11:20And charley casserly is talking big quarterbacks, big big bucks, boomer.
00:11:25"Inside the game" is next.
00:11:35you me?
00:11:37Don't worry about that.
00:11:38I switched 99 plan, so I wasn't charged extra.

00:12:35wait ice.
00:12:37What was I thinking?
00:12:39But I was still skating on thin ice with my cholesterol.
00:12:42Anyone with high cholesterol may be at increased risk of heart attack.
00:12:45Diet and exerciseweren't enough for me.
00:12:48I stopped kidding myself.
00:12:49I've been eating healthier, exercising more and now I'm also taking lipitor.
00:12:53If you've been kidding yourselfabout high cholesterol, stop.
00:12:57Lipitors a cholesterol-lowering medication, fda approved to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients who have heart disease or risk factors for heart disease.
00:13:05Lipitor is backed by over 18 years of research.
00:13:08[ Female Announcer ]LIPITOR IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, Including peoplewith liver problems and women who are nursing, pregnant,or may become pregnant.
00:13:14You need simple blood teststo check for liver problems.

00:14:00The $6 break for bold, weekdays at chili's.
00:14:38 welcome back live to our new york studios.
00:14:40I'm joined now by our super bowl-winning "the nfl today" general manager charley casserly.
00:14:44An awful lot of trash talking this week between the squads.
00:14:48Is the league planning to do anything about it?
00:14:49>> First of all, none of the players will be fined for what they said during the week.
00:14:53I talked to ray anderson this morning and he told me that each of the referees is going to go to the head coaches of the eight playoff teams and tell them the following things.
00:15:02They expect all the players to play within the rules.
00:15:05The second thing is they don't want any of these comments to carry over into actions on the field that are illegal hits, any flagrant hits, any egregious hits.
00:15:14Those players are going to be kicked out of the game.
00:15:17The league doesn't want to have to do it, but they'll warn the coaches to warn the players about that.
00:15:21Anybody kicked out of game, possible further discipline.
00:15:26James: ray anderson is the v.p.
00:15:27Of football operations.
00:15:28Talk about some of the big-name quarterbacks that boomer will love that got contract situations to be resolved.
00:15:34>> First of all, we have mr.
00:15:36Manning.
00:15:36Peyton manning, that is.
00:15:37Look for them to franchise peyton manning.
00:15:40That number under the present rules is $23 million.
00:15:45However, if they franchise him for two more years, those numbers are a total of $90 million over the next three years.
00:15:54I think the colts will offer him a multi-year contract with a signing bonus of over $15 million and a contract somewhere between $20 million and $25 million.
00:16:04That will be more than tom brady.
00:16:05His average is $18 million a year and his signing bonus was $48 million.
00:16:10 dan and boomer are warming up drew brees saying he'd like at extension.
00:16:16>> He has one year to go on his contract with the saints at a bargain rate of $10 million a year.
00:16:21Talking to the saints yesterday, they obviously want to extend him, so he has a long career with the saints.
00:16:26They haven't had any discussions on what those numrs are going to be.
00:16:32To me, he's the third-best quarterback in the nfl.
00:16:34That salary is an average of $17 million a year.
00:16:37That's what I think he should get.
00:16:38 meanwhile, pete carroll in seattle says he is interested in re-signing matt hasselbeck.
00:16:45>> What else do you say when you have a playoff game and he's the starting quarterback?
00:16:49I think they will try to re-sign him.
00:16:52Here's what I think happens.
00:16:53He's making $8 million a year.
00:16:55I think people have in mind a number somewhere around $6 million.
00:16:59What could help hasselbeck, there's a lot of teams that are desperate for a quarterback.
00:17:02Might drive that number up.
00:17:04 daily questions around michael vick.
00:17:06What's his status?
00:17:06>> The eagles want him back.
00:17:08He's going to be the starter next year.
00:17:10They're going to franchise him when that time comes out.
00:17:13They're also going to try to work on a multi--year deal.
00:17:18To me, that number should be in the $12 million to $14 million range.
00:17:25 kevin kolb said he'd like to start somewhere.
00:17:28Will philadelphia accommodate him?
00:17:29>> Andy reid said he'd like to have both quarterbacks back.
00:17:31If they get offered a number one pick, and they could, they'll think about moving him in that situation.
00:17:37Jake james let's turn to running backs, starting with reggie bush and pierre thomas.
00:17:44>> They want reggie bush back.
00:17:46He's making too much for what he does.
00:17:48Look for him to be asked to take some form of a pay cut.
00:17:51They haven't decided that yet.
00:17:53Also, pierre thomas.
00:17:54They'd like him back.
00:17:55Productive player for them.
00:17:56However, he could be a free agent next year depending on the system that we're in, but they'd like him back.
00:18:01 you talk about depending on the system.
00:18:05With the threat looming of a lockout, what are the copes planning to do?
00:18:08>> In february, all the coaches are going to get together and there's going to be a straw poll taken about whether to form a union.
00:18:15One of the questions is who would be eligible to be in the union?
00:18:18Head coaches wouldn't be.
00:18:20Coordinators, that's a question.
00:18:21All other assistants would be in that union.
00:18:23One of the things they want to talk to the owners about is this.
00:18:27We don't want a situation where the teams can go out and interview coaches for a position that they already have a coach under contract for.
00:18:33Coaches are bothered by that.
00:18:34But the owners also, I think they've got an idea, too.
00:18:38How about a salary cap for the coaches?
00:18:40That's something they might bring up.
00:18:43 charley, thank you so very much.
00:18:45Just ahead on "the nfl today," with the jets-patriots game not kicking off until tomorrow, there's still plenty of time to talk.
00:18:53>> This is about bill belichick vs. rex ryan.
00:18:57It's about him against myself.
00:18:59>> I don't think it's either one of us out there making any blocks or tackles.
00:19:02You won't see me doing it.
00:19:04>> Might be some crazy comments from each side.
00:19:07>> You go out there and put your best foot forward.
00:19:10>> I hate him, he hates me, he hates the jets, who cares?
00:19:14>> All we could have asked for was to play them one more time.
00:19:17>> We're going to do our talking on the field.
00:19:20One morning I shot an elephant how he got in my pajamas I don't know.
00:19:23Real language is filled with nuance, slang, and metaphor.
00:19:26It's more than half the world's data.
00:19:29But computers couldn't understand it.
00:19:30Watson is a computer that uncovers meaning in our language and pinpoints the right answer.
00:19:36Instantly.
00:19:37It uses deep analytics to answer questions computers never could before, even the ones on jeopardy!
00:19:42THAT'S WHAT I'M WORKING ON--I'M AN IBMer.
00:19:46Let's build a smarter planet.
00:21:21Ate something loaded with fat?
00:21:23We got a beef with that.
00:21:2425 Of our campbell's chunky soups give you 100% lean meat and a full serving of vegetables.
00:21:28So, come on. have the chunky soup from campbell's.
00:21:31™ >> brady back to throw.
00:22:22It's on the 5.
00:22:23Touchdown.
00:22:25Brady rolls to his left.
00:22:26Going to run it.
00:22:26He throws it.
00:22:27Touchdown.
00:22:30Brady, play-action.
00:22:32Touchdown.
00:22:34Four touchdown passes in the game for brady.
00:22:36>> That's our pepsi max maximum performance.
00:22:40 welcome back, everyone, as we continue live here on "the nfl today," and I turn to my colleague shannon to ask him if tom brady can keep his perfect streak alive tomorrow.
00:22:50 considering the jets 's on the road, there's zero chance tom brady throws an interception tomorrow.
00:22:57Boomer: I don't know about that.
00:22:58 speaking of new england, the patriots will host the jets divisional playoff game tomorrow.
00:23:0500 eastern with a special edition " and our colleagues jim nantz and phil simms will call that game, and they have more from foxboro.
00:23:18 we are at gillette stadium as the patriots are taking the field for their final walk-through, getting set for the divisional playoff game tomorrow.
00:23:25You know, partner, 45-3.
00:23:29It was 40 days ago.
00:23:31I'm sure this is really a big number that's hard to get out of the mind of all the jets fans and team.
00:23:37Phil: it is a big number.
00:23:38I don't care what the jets say, how much confidence they say they have.
00:23:42They need to come up here and turn things around.
00:23:44When they play this game, jim, somewhere late in the fourth quarter, if it's 3-0, 7-0, the game is not out of hand, I think that will give the jets some confidence.
00:23:52 the jets won in week two, beat them by a couple of touchdowns as you take a look at the quarterback comparisons.
00:23:58Brady in the first encounter had two of his only four interceptions in the whole season were by the jets in that week two game.
00:24:07The sanchez and jets trying to recover mentally off of 45-3 and how mark sanchez has stepped it up.
00:24:14 mentally and physically he's gotten a lot better.
00:24:17The last three games he's played, he played very well in all three.
00:24:21That has to give him confidence.
00:24:22And also, the design of the offense has changed some, too.
00:24:26It's made it a lot easier for mark sanchez to have success.
00:24:30 tom brady, 46 touchdowns on the season, only four picks.
00:24:35Have you ever seen a run like this by a quarterback for so long?
00:24:38Phil: I have not.
00:24:39Tom brady, his physical skills, we all know about that.
00:24:41But the design of the offense is so special that gives him all those opportunities.
00:24:45Just pick a guy.
00:24:46There's about six or seven different guys he can throw the football to.
00:24:51That's what makes them so difficult to play against.
00:24:53 jets-patriots tomorrow, round three, same kind of day expected.
00:24:58Clear and cold in foxboro.
00:24:59, in the studio in new york.
00:25:03 we turn to our resident super bowl-winning coach.
00:25:07 for the jets, we both know, if they keep it close, they can run the ball and use dustin keller.
00:25:15The onus goes on the defense.
00:25:17Two things they have to do tomorrow.
00:25:18They've got to try to create turnoverings.
00:25:21I know we talked about zero chance, but you said last week, the law of averages, at some point -- they've been playing flawless football.
00:25:29They have to find a way to take it over.
00:25:31New england got the ball inside the red zone five times last game and they scored five touchdowns.
00:25:36Hold them to field goals.
00:25:37Keep the game close is the jets' only chance to steal one.
00:25:42 try to get into the fourth quarter.
00:25:43 the one thing we do know about a bill belichick coached team and defense, is they'll play well.
00:25:50The jet want to run the football.
00:25:52You want to see the quarterback mark sanchez grow up.
00:25:55He grew up last week.
00:25:56When he had to make a play, he made the play.
00:25:59I think this game is going to fall into his lap again.
00:26:01They will not allow ladainian tomlinson and shonn greene to run the football.
00:26:07Hence, it falls back on mark sanchez's shoulders.
00:26:10 when rex ryan took over, he did not want the jets to become the same old jets.
00:26:15That's the thinking around here in new york as the jet fans, the positive pessimism.
00:26:22That's who they are.
00:26:23He has basically said this week that it's all about him and belichick.
00:26:26That's fine.
00:26:28Until antonio cromartie-smith -- antonio cromartie used vulgarity.
00:26:35That is beginning to spark a competitive fire within bill belichick and tom brady, because these are two ruthless guys that will take their game to another level to make sure that antonio cromartie realizes who they're playing against.
00:26:47Dan: I agree with you.
00:26:48Once the talk comes up, it comes up.
00:26:51Tom brady will put a lot of pressure on sanchez.
00:26:53New england scores early, they score often.
00:26:55When they get in the r zone, they get touchdowns p they don't kick field goals.
00:27:00When you look at what they've done this year as far as turnovers are concerned, ho are the jets going to be able to match that?
00:27:07I think they're not going to stay patient with the running game.
00:27:09The game is going to be in his lap.
00:27:11And what's going to happen?
00:27:12What's the history against the patriots?
00:27:15 not very good in that building.
00:27:17 but when someone says something like you said, you really want to rub their face in it.
00:27:24The patriots really want to punish the jets tomorrow.
00:27:27 I'm as passionate as anybody wanting to see a competitivh-up.
00:27:33However, excuse the old fellow here.
00:27:36Vulgarity, no place for that.
00:27:37As the nfl season draws to a close and many players are considering possible retirement, our cbs golf commentator david feherty has come up with a unique proposal to extend their careers.
00:27:51>> I'm here in my hometown of dallas where some say our cowboys have been suffering for a bum phillips most of the season.
00:28:00I don't know what kind of injury is that.

00:28:03That means it's time for the cbs golf crew to limber up.
00:28:08Jim nantz is ready to dump phil simms to become sir nick faldo's play by play butler.
00:28:14I think football players are similar to golfers in that it seems difficult for some of them to give it up.
00:28:18The last football to retire properly was probably barry sanders.
00:28:23His final gift to fans was making us feel like one of the against him.
00:28:28One minute barry sanders was in front of you, the next minute he was just gone.
